Correspondence from the 1840s and earlier… it’s surreal to go through family things as a trained historian and someone who has spent significant time in archives and learning digitization and standards of practice.

I forgot to post for a while. Life has been a lot- my dad, who has congestive heart failure, agreed to declutter and sell the farm finally. Unearthing Canadiana, documents which need to go to an archive, original indentures..

I have cancelled all trips to the US, conferences - it's not safe for women, Canadians, anyone who doesn't fit their idea of acceptable. According to Le Monde they even are saying criticizing Trump is tantamount to terrorism. It's insanity.

My mother, Dr. Sarah Keefer, died this morning. In her life she was a respected Anglo-Saxonist, a liturgist, and she loved Bede and Cuthbert and the beauty of Durham Cathedral.
Dementia is a hideous illness to have stolen her ability to enjoy those things from her. She is free now.

Reflecting on the world in which we presently live, I find I have hardened my values significantly with the present rise of fascism and worse. I will not dignify oppressors with false respect. I will keep being kind, compassionate, and considerate because screw nihilism and cruelty.

on the spaulders and knees "arte et amore munitus sum"

And for those who aren't on other media forms I'm on, the other fun update in my life is that I relax of late in full blued steel armour accented by brass I engraved with Latin I composed myself. Catharsis central and I recommend wholeheartedly!

In a spirit of tooting my own horn, I will post that I published a new book last month or so and I hope folks enjoy it and find it valuable. I really need my life to slow down a smidge so I can get back to coding my game soon...
