Not that you can’t tell a good story in VR, but that since you can’t control the frame of the camera, it’s hard as an author to control what your audience sees. Think about the narrative challenges of open world games (4/4)

I wouldn’t go so far as to say games can’t tell stories as well as novels, but they need to use different storytelling than novels. There’s this great video by Austin McConnell I’m reminded of where they explain how VR films don’t work (3/4)

Games shouldn’t have to mimic films, just like films shouldn’t have to mimic theater, and theater shouldn’t have to mimic oral storytelling, etc. Games are a separate medium and should wield their strengths to tell compelling stories. (2/4)

Yay for game studies discourse! I just want to add that I just hate when people talk about “cinematic games.” The framing makes it sound like the game is only good by emulating the cultural stigma and storytelling ability of film. (1/4)

What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house.
