This, and not the proprietary chatbot classroom, is the future of education.

The city of Miami hasn't elected a Democrat as mayor in almost 30 years, and a woman has never been mayor, but Eileen Higgins is well ahead tonight and looks like the clear favorite in the run off next month (run off between the top two candidates bc nobody got above 50%).

Fantastic discussion! Seriously appreciated the brief conversation on the state of academia as a profession at the beginning.

The Beautiful Soul

Just listened to this great discussion on Hegel’s Beautiful Soul. Especially Engley’s formula: β€œFrom beautiful soul to beautifully soiled.” But, I want to recommend this more so for the analysis of Michael Mann’s Manhunterβ€”a sadly now underrated and overlooked film. open.spotify.com/episode/7Bm6...

Probably not the piece you’re looking for but Mark Fisher’s β€œThe Weird and the Eerie” is a great little book!

Highly recommend Adam Syvertsen’s β€œβ€˜I’ll wait no longer’: Emigration, Speculation, and Utopia in Martin R. Delany’s Blake” in J19. Great piece. β€œβ€¦Delany seeks to use speculative fiction to (re)craft a narrative of Black history in the Americas that is conducive to building an emancipatory future.”

To understand the wretched, absurd toxicity of Florida politics now spreading worldwide, a useful example is the NRA's top Florida lobbyist getting state pols to nix attempts to make the Florida scrub jay the official state bird FOR 25 YEARS because she thinks the jay exhibits a "welfare mentality."

The MIT Press releases report on the future of open access publishing and policy The comprehensive report is the outcome of a National Science Foundation-funded workshop, identifying critical issues in open access publishing and how to address them.

Back on 9/20 @mitpress.bsky.social convened a meeting in DC to try to uncover the key questions about the future of research publishing that we need to answer. Yesterday we released a report covering the discussion points and opportunities for experimentation. mitpress.mit.edu/the-mit-pres...

MTM would be my go to pick but I’d also throw in 30 Rock and Space Ghost Coast to Coast as some out of left field options.

In the About page for the project, Dr. Josephs writes β€œJust as the manchineel and seagrape trees help to protect the coasts of the Caribbean and Florida, this project aims to safeguard Caribbean dramatic texts and make them available for scholars and students of the region.”

Manchineel + Seagrape

Excited to share Manchineel + Seagrape, an open-access journal dedicated to publishing edited scripts of Caribbean plays. I’ve been working with Dr. Kelly Baker Josephs on this project for over a year now, and we are excited to see it finally come to fruition! journals.flvc.org/MS/index

Collective power will be necessary to fight the worst of the Trump administration's abuses, defend our rights, and work towards a better world. Unions are one of the best tools we have. Now's the time to get organized.

Curious if AcademicSky has any thoughts on the Onyx BOOX and the Supernote A5X/A6X for note-taking and research purposes? I’ve been considering an e-ink tablets but I’ve been hesitant due to cross-functionality w/ Zotero, Obsidian, etc. The distraction free ecosystems are an appeal.

Either way, it could valuable to think through Nolan’s Tenet as a more theoretical engagement with entropy and recursivity and Oppenheimer as a practical-historical working through of the ideas developed in Tenet. All the references to β€œtheory/practice” in Oppenheimer are noteworthy in this regard.

I felt compelled to speculate why Oppenheimer was/was not a logical continuation of Nolan’s filmography. Landing on the fact that the film is still deeply in line with the set of broad questions that Nolan has been exploring since the beginning of his career

Interesting to also connect this to Todd McGowan’s β€œfictional Christopher Nolan” and his thesis on Nolan’s interest with the structure of truth, the necessity of lies, and the power of a necessary fiction to mediate our relation to truth

This narrative thread, along with Nolan’s already expressed interest with WWII via Dunkirk, actually makes Oppenheimer a sensible continuation of Nolan’s conceptual interests in temporality, environmental catastrophe, and nuclear power

Interesting to think about Oppenheimer in connection with Tenet. In Tenet, the scientist who creates the algorithm has an Oppenheimer-esque regret surrounding its production. The crux of the film is this scientist (potentially Barbara) following through and scattering the pieces of the algorithm.
