At 9:15 in HS19, hongbnguyen.bsky.social will present her work demonstrating an advantage predicting the behavior of simple shapes which look alive and goal-directed!

Also on Friday, Elisabeth Van der Hulst is part of the symposium "Temporal dynamics of cognitive processes underlying aesthetic experience" organized by @bvb373.bsky.social and @hongbnguyen.bsky.social with her talk: "In pursuit of movement: Choreographic complexity and viewing behavior in dance"⬇️

2. Then, in the afternoon, Hong Nguyen @hongbnguyen.bsky.social will present a series of experiments which show that observers make more efficient use of visual information when predicting the behavior of a shape which looks goal-directed.

We conclude that visual processing by default assumes that objects are in frictive contact with a floor, but also rapidly integrates visual cues to frictive contact with other surfaces, in order to orient attention toward where they will move next.

In Experiment 2, spatial orienting also factored in whether and how the wheel was touching another visible surface, indicating rapid, online analysis of visual cues to friction.

In Experiment 1, I found that this regularity of frictive floor contact is wired into attention: viewing a lone rotating β€˜wheel’ automatically orients attention in the direction the wheel would normally move if in frictive contact with a floor surface beneath it.

Most objects are touching a frictive surface beneath (otherwise moving around would be quite frustrating).

Does visual attention implicitly model physical regularities? In a new πŸ“„ I report a cueing effect that shows how spatial orienting models the physical force of *friction*!
