A grassy path through a prairie landscape. The messy foliage is in full growth of mid summer with a mix of lush greens and yellows. There is a birdbox just to the left of the path.
I'm ready for the intensity of summer foliage again

A photo of Canada Geese flying overhead. The perspective of the photo is from directly beneath a V-shaped group of flying geese, with a clear blue sky background.

It seems like I'm unable to message you on here for some reason, I'm not sure how Bluesky message restrictions work lol. Do you have this set intentionally? I can also ping on your store page if you'd prefer

28.02.2025 20:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The treatment of Hughes' work is very reminiscent of the white-washing/de-radicalization of black intellectuals throughout history, and it's crucial to our understanding of US history to resist the watering down of their messages. Thank you for sharing!

A photo of an egret, a large white bird with a long yellow pointed bill. It is a hazy yellow color from the bright morning sun. In the foreground of the photo is a clumped mass of lilypads floating atop a shallow lake. In the background are patches of open water with a few extra rafts of lilypads.

A photograph of multiple layers of clouds, illuminated by the setting sun. Near the middle of the clouds in a bright patch is the silhouette of a plane flying into the horizon.

A photograph of a chimpmunk standing on top of a small log. The background is a weedy patch of tall grass. The image is a summery yellow and green from the rising morning sun.
A chipmunk atop a small overturned log. I'm already missing the weedy green plants and warm summer mornings!

A photo of a sunrise with thin overlapping layers of cloud cover, causing the sunlight to bleed through in deep orange, red and yellow. The upper layers of cloud are letting more bright light through, causing a highlighted segment of clouds to stand out and show more of a fluffy texture. The lower half of the image is a scene overlooking a calm lake, reflecting the colors above. A hazy dark green treeline shows in the distance at the center of the image. Fronds of a plant on the near shoreline loom in the immediate distance and are out of focus.
To watch a sunrise is to observe a scene played out for billions of years. A moment to reflect on your place in our world, your place in time.

Nice! I havenβt read the graphic novel version of that book yet. I donβt think Iβve heard of The Anomaly before
23.11.2024 01:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That was also the last time I read it. The language Steinbeck uses during the short interludes is cynical and straightforward, these are among my favorite parts of the book on my second read. Iβd say you should give it another go!
22.11.2024 20:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The book cover for The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. This cover shows a family overlooking a vast landscape. A procession of vehicles makes its way up a winding road through the valley and towards a ridge of mountains.
The book cover for A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge. A stylized, futuristic spaceport sits at the center of the cover in the foreground, with a galactic cloud of stars across the background.
What is #booksky reading this weekend?
I'm working on these two!
1) The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck
2) A Fire Upon the Deep - Vernor Vinge

22.11.2024 17:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think our interpretations are actually quite similar. I agree that we need new systems, new approaches to combating the societal ills facing the world (as you say, cultivating new apple trees). To do that though, we must understand the powerful individuals blocking progress (e.g. the worms).
22.11.2024 16:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The bad actors in this case being the billionaires, the fascists, and the politicians that fail to represent what people in the US actually want. You must change your perspective (e.g. split the world in two) and critically analyze the systems/powerful individuals that stall or reverse progress.
22.11.2024 16:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Those national divorce comments and some of the response calling MAGA voters worms is precisely why I added more thoughts to this thread. I do not believe that L. Hughesβ intention was to literally imply a splitting of society but rather to examine which bad actors are undermining society overall.

βI can't be a pessimist because I am alive. To be a pessimist means that you have agreed that human life is an academic matter. So, I am forced to be an optimist. I am forced to believe that we can survive, whatever we must survive.β β James Baldwin, 06/24/1963 /end
