I don't know if it's my favourite, but David Kelsey's book Imagining Redemption is very accessible and thought-provoking (and also short).

Roller coaster with Air Canada over past few days. We were booked to fly to Winnipeg, expected it to be cancelled because of strike, told it would go ahead today, then cancelled. Trying to request refund: email says do it online, website says to call, when I call they say do it online. Arghh..

But I agree that there has not been a reckoning with what the β€œinternational” mandate of these organizations mean in the current context. I’m not going to AAR this year but I do hope to go again at some point.

I did contact the AAR executive director about this back when CAUT issued their travel advisory. They responded to my email right away, recognizing the issueβ€”they knew of advisoryβ€” and pointing to virtual options.

My only encounter with him was his very eloquent and moving sermon at George Vandervelde’s funeral. Those two had an agreement that whoever outlived the other would preach at their funeral. I don’t really recall what he said, but your tribute rings true based on my memory of that day.

Toronto Mennonite Theological Centre (1990-2023): A Critical History - Mennonite Life The genesis of the book Recovering From The Anabaptist Vision (2020) can be traced back 20 years to the first graduate student conference organized by the Toronto Mennonite Theological Centre […]

Very happy to see this history of the Toronto Mennonite Theological Centre published. It's by Susan Fish, based on both documentary sources and several interviews (including of me).

I published a short article, β€œAnabaptist Martyrs and the Ambivalence of Mennonite (Non-)Violence," in the June issue of Ecumenical Trends. As always, happy to provide PDF to anyone who asks.

That church is about 2 blocks from where I grew up and I passed it all the time. But I’ve never been inside.

1. Connecting with and supporting students. We have great students (I just wish we could persuade more students to take our courses/programs!)
2. Making new connections with colleagues in other Arts programs. Esp as we face big institutional challenges, these connections are vital.

The final virtual class meeting of my "Peace Church Theology" course is tonight. Students are presenting on books they reviewed which is always engaging.

I have written a letter to the board and administration and strongly encourage colleagues to do the same. It is important that Ambrose University know that many are watching.

Some FOMO right now. I'm teaching a spring course and so not participating in either of these conferences in the coming days: Canadian Theological Society (in Toronto), and Believers Church Conference (in Amsterdam).

Great people & interesting ideas at each event, but here I sit, at home...

At this point, no. I have attended AAR almost every year for over 20 years but will not do this year. The CAUT advisory confirmed this decision for me.

Very pleased to see that ecumenism, reconciliation, and common witness will be major themes in the Zurich worship service marking 500th anniversary of Anabaptism (in progress now).

Final Print Issue for The Conrad Grebel Review | Conrad Grebel University College | University of Waterloo The Conrad Grebel Review, established in 1983, was an initiative of Conrad Grebel University College’s first Chaplain and Religious Studies Professor Walter Kla

I noted a few weeks ago the fact that The Conrad Grebel Review is ceasing publication. Here's an official announcement with some reflection on its significance, and the reasons it was ended.

Demson was one of the few giants of TST that I didn’t take a course with. But even secondhand I could feel his enthusiasm and impact on students.
