In old lore the rose stood for silence. A bloom carved or hung above a council table meant all spoken there must remain secret “sub rosa”, under the rose. The custom arose from the myth in which Cupid gave a rose to Harpocrates to ensure he kept Venus’s secrets. #RoseWednesday
