Lisa Cook documented the devastation of the end of Reconstruction. This graph, from her paper "Violence and Economic Activity," shows the effects of Jim Crow on Black patenting and newspapers. As she said on Planet Money: "1899 was the peak year for African American patents per capita. It still is."

Second, assumptions are self destructive in their honesty. The more explicit the assumption, the more criticism it invites, for it tends to trigger a richer space of alternative scenarios in which the assumption may fail. Researchers prefer therefore to declare threats in public and make assumptions in private.

A long long time ago, in a far away galaxy... the US used to tax the rich
23.05.2025 20:19 β π 4478 π 2065 π¬ 117 π 216Yesterday the Trump Administration abruptly pulled the plug on these grants, cutting off $400 million in carefully planned state activities in termination letters. It is a tragic waste of the ingenuity of dedicated state, federal and vendor staff -- and it means workers will more likely fall through the crack in the safety net the next time the job market tanks and workers need aid. PS--I am not taking it down and we are not giving up on unemployed workers.
