Systematic modulation of charge and spin in graphene nanoribbons on MgO - Nature Communications Precise control of charge and spin states in quantum dots is often challenging. Here, the authors show systematic manipulation of the electron occupation in graphene nanoribbons laying on MgO.

Out in Nat. Commun. Led by David Serrate (Zaragoza) the exp. team shows controlled electron filling in GNRs on ultrathin MgO/Ag(001). Electropositive surface = up to 19 extra electrons! Honoured to contribute some theory.

How a salt layer shapes electron behaviour in a single molecule Salt, far from being a passive bystander, actively reshapes the molecule’s structure and decides where extra electrons reside

Researchers studied a copper-phthalocyanine molecule on a thin layer of salt. They discovered that the salt actively reshapes the molecule’s structure and decides where extra electrons reside.Β

On-Surface Synthesis of a Ferromagnetic Molecular Spin Trimer Triangulenes are prototypical examples of open-shell nanographenes. Their magnetic properties, arising from the presence of unpaired Ο€ electrons, can be extensively tuned by modifying their size and shape or by introducing heteroatoms. Different triangulene derivatives have been designed and synthesized in recent years thanks to the development of on-surface synthesis strategies. Triangulene-based nanostructures with polyradical character, hosting several interacting spin units, can be challenging to fabricate but are particularly interesting for potential applications in carbon-based spintronics. Here, we combine pristine and N-doped triangulenes into a more complex nanographene, TTAT, predicted to possess three unpaired Ο€ electrons delocalized along the zigzag periphery. We generate the molecule on a Au(111) surface and detect direct fingerprints of multiradical coupling and high-spin state using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. With the support of theoretical calculations, we show that its three radical units are localized at distinct parts of the molecule and couple via symmetric ferromagnetic interactions, which result in a S = 3/2 ground state, thus demonstrating the realization of a molecular ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin trimer.

By controlling charge transfer to a single Cu-phthalocyanine molecule, we show that substrate polarization enhances and alters the Jahn-Teller effect β€” driving two excess electrons into one of two degenerate frontier orbitals despite Coulomb repulsion.

Triangulene dimers linked by one or two para-biphenyl units were synthesized on Au(111). STM, non-contact AFM, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal an open-shell singlet magnetic exchange coupling for Dimer 1 (ES-T=15β€…mV), influenced by the dihedral angles of the two para-biphenyl units. Dimers 2β€² with an ES-T=6.6β€…mV were obtained from a more flexible precursor equipped with one para-biphenyl linker.
