We visit Silent Hill for the aesthetic! And we love to see dancers in monster suits! You can definitely tell they had less than half the budget of the first movie but Gans knows what the people (me) want.

Return to Silent Hill poster

Return to Silent Hill is a big result for me and the 11 other people whoโ€™ve been waiting 20 years for Christophe Gans to return to Silent Hill, 6 yrs of which were waiting for this film to be made and released, and whose only request was that it look and sound like a Christophe Gans Silent Hill film

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple poster

Returning to social media after a hiatus to say 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is incredible and Iโ€™m going to see it again as soon as can. Easily my favourite in the series and just a really good fucking film. Nia DaCosta knocks it out of the park, Fiennes is amazing, Oโ€™Connell is electric. Wow.

Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek in The Old Man and the Gun

There are so many great Robert Redford movies but Iโ€™d like to shout out The Old Man and the Gun, which is one of those films that seemed like a nice little film at the time, and became one I realised I think about a lot and made really strong impression on me. Amazing supporting cast too.

I had no idea how absolutely NUTS Ricochet is. John Lithgow has a gladiatorial sword fight with neo-Nazis in prison and puts Denzel Washington through the kind of ridiculous payback that can only be described as a half-remembered coked-up Cape Fear nightmare.

Iโ€™m just sharing this again because I havenโ€™t really promoted it much lately (lots of life stuff and work stuff and everything going on lately in the world), but Iโ€™d really love to get to 300 subscribers by October if possible.

Cheers!

I watched The Mangler for the first time last night (based on the Stephen King short story about a laundry pressed thatโ€™s possessed by a demon) and I felt it was important to share that thereโ€™s a crime scene photographer character in it called J.J..J. Pictureman.

Itโ€™s tough to choose but my favourite wink-wink horror sequel titles would have to be Somtimes They Come Backโ€ฆAgain and Sometimes They Come Backโ€ฆfor More.

Every now and again I remember that Candyman 2 is titled Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh. Just wonderful.

I realise that this is somewhat of a niche post but did anyone else get Hot Rod vibes from the new Toxic Avenger?
Also: Julia Davis rocks. More Julia Davis in movies.

Priest film poster

I was watching In the Lost Lands last night and suddenly remembered the 2011 movie Priest and had one of those experiences where I had to google it and watch the trailer to make sure I didnโ€™t make up the 2011 movie Priest. I didnโ€™t! I saw it in bad murky 3D!

Also, I obviously love Timothy Olyphant in everything but seeing him play a sassy android having to corral excitable children on a monster hunt while dealing with a child for a boss is truly wonderful.

Really enjoying Alien Earth. Lovely Nostromo-era tech, monster action is plentiful, the cast is outstanding, and the fantastically performed Lost Boys are the most interesting thing to happen to the Alien saga in a good long while. Particularly wowed by Babou Ceesayโ€™s gripping performance as Morrow.

For 40 years I've managed to avoid seeing The Goonies, and have never for a second regretted it (except maybe for that pub quiz when all the movie questions pertained to films the quizmaster had seen as a child) but this is rather lovely.

Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman is the scariest book Iโ€™ve read in ages. Just relentless, I couldnโ€™t put it down. The cast for Rob Savageโ€™s upcoming movie of it is perfect too, canโ€™t wait to see it.

Danny Huston in a blue jacket and bow tie giving a smarmy thumbs up.

Saw the new Naked Gun yesterday and Iโ€™m still giggling. So much to enjoy but Danny Huston is just the perfect choice for a Naked Gun villain. Finally, someone has given him a bad guy role to rival his 00s peak and he has a goddamn blast. A righteous kill indeed. โ€œDonโ€™t forget Fergie. The Duchess.โ€

How down on the tech industry am I? So down that while watching 2001 tonight w/ @mzspress.bsky.social, I talked back to HAL 9000.
HAL: It can only be attributable to human error.
Me: My ass.
HAL: The 9000 series has a perfect operational record.
Me: Liar! Dave, Frank, don't listen! It's a trap!
