I’m signed up to several casting agencies for work as an extra and the only roles I get offered are prisoners, cultists and scumbags. It’s almost like I have a vibe or something?

Watched James Marsh’s strange, sad and blackly amusing docudrama Wisconsin Death Trip last night and now I’m desperate for a feature film on Mary “the window smasher” Sweeny.

Watched the Euros final at my local cinema last night. There were some issues with the screen that meant, even if only for a moment, we were watching football in Academy ratio. Somehow it just felt right.

This, from John Darnielle’s 33 ⅓ book on Master of Reality, is as perfect a description of Ozzy’s voice as you’ll ever find. He sounded like he was from the street. He sounded like the everyman and yet like no man ever has before or ever will again. He sounds like me and yet nothing like me.

If you wanna rail at fascists there's War Pigs or Miracle Man. There's an Ozzy song for everything.

How ill must Ozzy have been at Back to the Beginning given that he’s gone just a few weeks later? And yet he gave it everything *and* sounded incredible doing it. Feel enormously privileged to have seen his final bow. In many ways a perfect ending. There’ll never be another.

Ozzy is one of like 3 people in Decline of Western Civilization Part 2 that comes off as a decent human being and I always love the scene where Penelope Spheeris interviews him making breakfast while he explains the ups and downs of the business.

Another favourite Ozzy annunciation is the way he says “burglar” in this 1982 interview. He spits it out with such speed and certainty. Cracks me up every time I hear it.

He does a similar thing, to sensational effect, with the word “tiger” on Johnny Blade, which for my money is peak Ozzy and peak Sabbath. As emotionally resonant and “real” as their music has ever been.

One of my all-time favourite Ozzy annunciations is the way he stretches the elasticity of the words “cell” and “well” to their absolute limits in A National Acrobat. It’s *so* nasal. He showcases more character in a few words here than many singers do with entire albums.

Few singers ever have possessed this quality. And few voices have ever made me so emotional. Even the Sabbath and Ozzy songs that aren’t necessarily deemed emotional can set me off. I associate Ozzy’s voice with being working class, with being bullied for being weird, with just fucking going for it.

The Guardian calling Alice in Chains’ Back to the Beginning set “sluggish”? Heinous behaviour. Thousands of us went feral the second they stomped into Man in the Box and didn’t let up through Would? and their Fairies Wear Boots cover. One of my highlights of a day absolutely packed with them.

I have my concerns about the organisation of tomorrow’s show but the way Birmingham has invested in this weekend is a real example of how municipalities can lean into their cultural heritage and leverage soft power to their advantage. Which is to say, more of this shit please.

There’s a real electricity about Birmingham today. People from all over the world convening in public spaces, swapping stories, handing out fliers, happily taking photos for each other, all to demonstrate their love and appreciation of #BlackSabbath. This is what civic pride looks like.
