I can never tell if they prefer the lurid fantasy to the tawdry reality because it's weirdly comforting to think there's an unbeatable, ontologically evil force out there, thus freeing them from responsibility for fighting it, or if they're just getting off on the idea of that sort of thing.

It DOES NOT HELP that, much like QAnon believers, people are going off of second or third hand accounts of what is in the files, mostly reposted by people without experience in either forensics or victim advocacy, about incomplete and redacted data sets, and focusing on the most salacious claims.

Its disheartening to see people rush to embrace outlandish, Satanic Panic style theories about the Epstein files. They'd rather believe in Satanic baby killers than in rich guys exploiting girls and young women in a criminal manner. It's just another way in letting these guys off the hook.
