Thursday's letters: UCP hiding from accountability Edmonton Journal readers speak out on on Alberta invoking the notwithstanding clause and CFL rule changes.

“A government does not reach for the notwithstanding clause four times in a month unless something is deeply wrong. This isn’t normal. It isn’t safe. And it isn’t democracy. Each time rights are pushed aside, a warning siren is blaring: Power is being placed above people.”

Alberta to invoke notwithstanding clause to shield 3 transgender bills from court challenges | CBC News The Alberta government has tabled legislation that seeks to invoke the notwithstanding clause to shield a suite of bills that affects transgender youth and adults from legal challenges.

I am pretty sure that when Merv Leitch and Peter Lougheed first created the notwithstanding clause, they didn’t mean it to be deployed to bully and oppress literal school children. #ableg #abpoli #TransRightsAreHumanRights #Alberta #notwithstandingclause

Yes to every word of this.

If we’re not here to care for each other, what are we even doing?

An advanced society that chooses compassion over domination is the only one worth fighting for.👇

5 Manipulation Tactics Premier Danielle Smith Uses
1. Victimhood Framing
She paints Alberta as a victim of Ottawa - saying billions are taken, jobs are lost, and opportunities are stolen.
> Why it's manipulative: It makes people feel attacked, even when the situation is more complex. It turns federal policies into personal betrayals, which increases anger and fear.
2. Scapegoating the Federal Government
She blames almost every problem - economy, jobs, investment, inflation - on Ottawa,
> Why it's manipulative: It simplifies complex issues and deflects attention from what her own government could be doing better. It makes one easy enemy, the feds.
3. Us vs. Them Language
She divides Canadians into good Albertans vs. out-of-touch eastern elites, freedom-loving citizens vs, interfering bureaucrats.
> Why it's manipulative: It creates tribal loyalty, making people suspicious of outsiders or those who disagree. It makes unity look like weakness and division look like a strength.
4. Emotional Extremes
She uses strong emotional words like 'attacks', 'crippling , 'ravaged,' and 'hostile.
> Why it's manipulative: This ramps up fear and urgency, When people are scared or angry, they stop questioning - and follow the strongest voice in the room.
5. Pretending to Be the Only Reasonable Voice
She says she respects both separatists and federalists and just wants "a fair deal." She seems moderate - while planting radical ideas (like separation) as "understandable."
> Why it's manipulative: It disguises hardline rhetoric as balanced. It allows her to push extreme positions without taking full responsibility.
These tactics appeared in Danielle Smith's May 5th speech to Albertans.

Premier Smith;
I was born here, not that it gives me any more rights and privileges than any other Albertan. I attended two of Alberta's fine universities. I worked in the Oil and Gas industry here. I have lived in rural and urban communities here for over 50 years. Your divisive and polarizing rhetoric is ruining this place I call home.
You should know, and I expect you do, that your words matter. When you constantly address the opinions of a minority of Albertans as legitimate, you fan the flames of separation, even as you say you do not want Alberta to separate from Canada. I wish you would also address the opinions of Albertans who wish to stay in Canada, instead of
"othering" us by saying, as you did in your address yesterday: "There are thousands of Albertans that are so attached and loyal to their identity as Canadians that there is nothing Ottawa has done .. . that would justify Alberta leaving Canada." You paint us as the ones who are disloyal. This is a betrayal.

If you truly care about a plurality of opinions, and I am not at all convinced you do, then you would choose to reassure every Albertan that there is a place for them here.
Instead, you pit Albertans against each other. That isn't leadership. I expect better from my premier.
So much better.
Sincerely,
Holly Hoye

After her address yesterday, I wrote a letter to the premier without swear words. It took every ounce of reserve from the very pit of my sickened stomach.

Perhaps you could share your thoughts with her too.

As I just said on radio what is most alarming about Danielle Smith tape is not the attempted collusion with a foreign government to interfere in our election it's that she said Poilievre is "in sync" with "new direction" in America which is a brutal autocracy with a crashing economy 🇨🇦 #CanadaSky

So the guy the UCP govt tried to get fired from his govt job because of his podcast criticizing the Premier had his podcast shut down by the guy who gave the Premier's staff sky box tickets to a Stanley Cup game last year? Nothing incredibly fishy illegal about that, I'm sure, right?

Really privileged to be captioning a fantastic documentary on basketball in Haida Gwaii, and its connection to the culture, Residential Schools, and their fight for land title.

It'll be on Crave. I've worked on a lot of First Nations stuff over the years but the basketball culture is new to me.

My rural vet office is adding $5.00 to everyone’s vet bill to pay for community members’ bills pets who can’t afford it right now (she already only charges cost if you can’t afford it). And you know what? No one is complaining.
