IME milliput is better than kneadite, and as others have mentioned, pressure. Kneadite as a bit too much spring in it for me in this application

What's really getting my goat at the moment is that I'm certain I've seen something about painting moss effects, but for life of me I can't remember where or what it was, whether it was an infographic style, or a youtube video

For the texture I don't know that you really have another choice. Maybe the dense contouring sponges for makeup could have fine enough tips to add the sort of.. Tendril-y patterns of moss, and maybe that'd be enough to give it some texture?
