14.02.2026 21:06 โ ๐ 6816 ๐ 1089 ๐ฌ 63 ๐ 68Do you feel like having these dinners has given you more hope? Not necessarily the dinners, but the response has been so cool. I wrote about it three times last year, and it was some of the most viral stuff Iโve ever written. The videos I made got millions of views. Iโve been in the public eye as a professional political operative for nearly a decade. Iโve published two books. And the most-read thing Iโve done is talking about my husband cooking dinner. That is bananas to me. I think itโs indicative of a hunger for very concrete things you can do to build community in this moment.
In the same way that Iโm hopeful because Iโve seen 80,000 people sign up to run for office last year, Iโm hopeful because every day my DMs have someone saying, โWe just had our first potluck! I was inspired by your post. It was really fun.โ Itโs the same idea as the work we do at Run for Something, empowering people to take agency in their lives and run for office. Iโm on brand in every space. You donโt have to settle for things being bad. You have incredible agency in your life. If your social life sucks, there are some things you canโt fix โ but sometimes you can. It requires putting yourself out there and being vulnerable, and sometimes someone breaks a glass or flakes at the last minute, and thatโs part of it. But if you want things to be better in any aspect of your life โ political, personal, social โ just because you cannot fix every root problem that has caused it, doesnโt mean you shouldnโt try to fix some. You have agency. Things donโt have to suck.
"You have agency. Things don't have to suck." is basically the thesis of my entire career & life.
I explain what I mean -- politically, socially, emotionally -- in this convo about our year of hosting weekly dinners. forevers.substack.com/p/friendship...

Happy birthday to one of the greatest, Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery, he didn't know his actual birthday, but chose to celebrate it on this day.
Please read his books and essays; please teach your children his story when they are old enough to understand.
Yes! Rather than chasing Trump's policies, they should chase his strategy of shaping public perception.
