jesse jackson was constantly played as a punchline on 90s late-night TV to the point that i didn't understand his history of activism and serious left-leaning political platform until i was much older. i have to think, to some degree, that was on purpose.

Republicans Love Supreme Court Expansion When It Gets Them What They Want When it comes to state supreme courts, Republican politicians have been happy to add (or subtract) justices as they see fit.

You have to give Republicans credit: Even when supreme court expansion would benefit them, they stick to their principles and refuse to push to add jusโ€”haha just kidding they cave immediately

It's kind of funny how Hayek's (mostly correct) argument against central planning because concentrating that much economic power in one place inevitably lead to totalitarian behavior is also a pretty strong argument against like, extreme concentrations of wealth and market power

(around an image of a masked ICE agent holding a gun) Republicans "One Big Beautiful Bill' nearly tripled funding for ICE. That money came from your benefits:

paid for by cuts to reproductive health care

paid for by cuts to Medicare & Medicaid

paid for by cuts to SNAP

paid for by cuts to clean energy projects

paid for by cuts to obesity prevention

paid for by cuts to disaster response

paid for by cuts to energy tax credits

Do you feel like having these dinners has given you more hope?
Not necessarily the dinners, but the response has been so cool. I wrote about it three times last year, and it was some of the most viral stuff Iโ€™ve ever written. The videos I made got millions of views.

Iโ€™ve been in the public eye as a professional political operative for nearly a decade. Iโ€™ve published two books. And the most-read thing Iโ€™ve done is talking about my husband cooking dinner. That is bananas to me.

I think itโ€™s indicative of a hunger for very concrete things you can do to build community in this moment.

In the same way that Iโ€™m hopeful because Iโ€™ve seen 80,000 people sign up to run for office last year, Iโ€™m hopeful because every day my DMs have someone saying, โ€œWe just had our first potluck! I was inspired by your post. It was really fun.โ€

Itโ€™s the same idea as the work we do at Run for Something, empowering people to take agency in their lives and run for office. Iโ€™m on brand in every space.

You donโ€™t have to settle for things being bad. You have incredible agency in your life.

If your social life sucks, there are some things you canโ€™t fix โ€” but sometimes you can. It requires putting yourself out there and being vulnerable, and sometimes someone breaks a glass or flakes at the last minute, and thatโ€™s part of it.

But if you want things to be better in any aspect of your life โ€” political, personal, social โ€” just because you cannot fix every root problem that has caused it, doesnโ€™t mean you shouldnโ€™t try to fix some.

You have agency. Things donโ€™t have to suck.

"You have agency. Things don't have to suck." is basically the thesis of my entire career & life.

I explain what I mean -- politically, socially, emotionally -- in this convo about our year of hosting weekly dinners. forevers.substack.com/p/friendship...

Happy birthday to one of the greatest, Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery, he didn't know his actual birthday, but chose to celebrate it on this day.

Please read his books and essays; please teach your children his story when they are old enough to understand.

Cmon now guys. If any Dem says anything besides shut down until this is all gone then there's no need for federal government at all. These are concentration camps. If you're too scared to say so then you're part of the problem.

I almost cried during the Bad Bunny show when I saw the workers repairing the electrical system. I spent years working on Puerto Rico's crisis, and this was the one thing I couldn't resolve before moving to the academy. The Supreme Court Lives in Fox News' America A Court that does not share a common factual world with the people it governs is untethered from democratic reality.

On SCOTUS: "When law is built atop myth, and adjudication proceeds from narrative rather than evidence, constitutional guarantees become contingent and fragile."

Originalism is part of this dynamic, too.

We can simultaneously say Bad Bunny is a citizen of the US and denying the existence of his citizenship is racist and xenophobic AND we can point out that his citizenship, and that of every Puerto Rican, is essentially a second class version as a result of colonialism and oppression to this day.

The degree to which many white Americans live in cultural segregation is underappreciated, I think. You might say Bad Bunny's music isn't aimed at a white audience, but that's what I mean. Black and brown Americans are familiar with white artists; this purposeful insularity only goes one way.
