Do you feel like having these dinners has given you more hope? Not necessarily the dinners, but the response has been so cool. I wrote about it three times last year, and it was some of the most viral stuff I’ve ever written. The videos I made got millions of views. I’ve been in the public eye as a professional political operative for nearly a decade. I’ve published two books. And the most-read thing I’ve done is talking about my husband cooking dinner. That is bananas to me. I think it’s indicative of a hunger for very concrete things you can do to build community in this moment.

In the same way that I’m hopeful because I’ve seen 80,000 people sign up to run for office last year, I’m hopeful because every day my DMs have someone saying, “We just had our first potluck! I was inspired by your post. It was really fun.” It’s the same idea as the work we do at Run for Something, empowering people to take agency in their lives and run for office. I’m on brand in every space. You don’t have to settle for things being bad. You have incredible agency in your life. If your social life sucks, there are some things you can’t fix — but sometimes you can. It requires putting yourself out there and being vulnerable, and sometimes someone breaks a glass or flakes at the last minute, and that’s part of it. But if you want things to be better in any aspect of your life — political, personal, social — just because you cannot fix every root problem that has caused it, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to fix some. You have agency. Things don’t have to suck.

We can simultaneously say Bad Bunny is a citizen of the US and denying the existence of his citizenship is racist and xenophobic AND we can point out that his citizenship, and that of every Puerto Rican, is essentially a second class version as a result of colonialism and oppression to this day.

The degree to which many white Americans live in cultural segregation is underappreciated, I think. You might say Bad Bunny's music isn't aimed at a white audience, but that's what I mean. Black and brown Americans are familiar with white artists; this purposeful insularity only goes one way.
