Méndez replied that he would comply once his lawyer arrived, who was already on her way to assist him. “Roll down the window so we can talk,” another agent insisted, while Méndez’s wife asked if they had an arrest warrant for her or her husband.

So one detail in this article that seems important is that they said they'd speak to ICE once their lawyer arrived. They were planning to comply, but they smashed their way in anyways.
