Microhaplotype Methods Enable Relationship Inference in a Bottlenecked Mammalian Species
Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) are among the most genetically depauperate mammals in the world. A near-total population bottleneck in the 19th century, coupled with the breeding sy...
New publication, the second from my time as a postdoc at UC Santa Cruz and NOAA Fisheries! We developed a panel of microhaplotype loci to identify kin in northern elephant seals, a species where this problem has been difficult given limited genetic diversity.

Iβve been fortunate to have advisors and colleagues remind me that my efforts make me an expert on the topics Iβve invested in. I never need the ego boost, but itβs reassuring that patience, collegiality and hard work has kept me on the right path. (3/3)

This meeting in Perth is going to hold a special place in my heart because itβs the first time I truly felt like a colleague. Folks were actively seeking me out to field my opinions and thoughts and even offer collaborative opportunities. (2/3)

Thatβs a wrap on SMM 2024 for me. Not only did I get to learn about some amazing science being done across the globe, but I was able to reconnect with friends and colleagues Iβve made throughout the years, and make entirely new ones! (1/3)
