A while back, I worked at a comic book store five days a week, so I had access to a lot of old Marvel and DC comics. I made these brushes from scanning the comics directly. My brush set has all 64 colors which were possible to print on newspaper at the time.

actually given the lack of clear line work I don’t think Nolan even drew the fire in the glasses, Adrienne Roy might’ve just added that in coloring. still working to train my eye to pick up on the distinct contributions of penciler vs inker vs colorist, but I digress

nearly done with finally reading all 100+ issues of Knightfall/Knightquest/Knightsend era Batman. there’s a lot of fun to be had in there but overall I think I may have sustained a little bit of brain damage doing this

and even then there are other Jeph Loeb Batman books drawn by Tim Sale that look a thousand times better

does speak to the astonishingly low standards of comic readers though that this is by and large still a venerated work 20+ years later when it is the storytelling equivalent of eating 30 different jelly beans at once

I hated it years ago when I was told it was one of the best Batman comics and I discovered it was actually terrible, but knowing it’s terrible made me almost find it charming now. I mean Lego games can be fun, after all, and I liked seeing all the characters drawn in Jim Lee’s ridiculous style

it’s just a loose framework for familiar faces showing up every 5 pages so you can go wow it’s Huntress! wow it’s Harley! wow it’s Clayface! and clap over and over until they reveal that the bad guy is exactly who you expected the whole time and then it’s over. even for superhero comics it’s hollow
