Overfishing has caused cod to halve in body size since 1990s, study finds Evolutionary change driven by intensive fishing led cod to ‘shrink’ from average 40cm length in 1996 to 20cm in 2019 Overfishing has led to a collapse in the eastern Baltic cod population, but over the past three decades the size of the fish themselves has also been dramatically and mysteriously shrinking. Now scientists have uncovered genomic evidence that intensive fishing has driven rapid evolutionary changes that have contributed to these fish roughly halving in average body length since the 1990s. We tend to shift our baselines fairly quickly. In the 1900s, this June would have been warmer than average.

DN Debatt.

If you have a chance to see the new Swedish documentary on the dire state of fish stocks and fisheries in the Baltic Sea, please do. We need a public debate on this issue also among our neighbours around the Baltic to find the political will to change the current dysfunctional system.

Land rise, has been a prominent feature of the coastal zone of the northern Baltic Sea since the last glaciation. Not so anymore, as the rate of sea level rise will nullify land rise for the rest of the century. For large portions of our European coasts though, prospects are much bleaker.

Bra att länsstyrelserna lyfter problemen i Västerhavet. Man föreslår följande åtgärder:

Atlantic herring is one of the most abundant fishes in the world. In two new studies, we show that some herring in the Baltic Sea have become fish eaters. These piscivorous herring are genetically unique, grow fast, and play an important role in regulating stickleback populations.

The densest water in the world ocean forms around Antarctica, and then spreads out to flood the global abyss. We’ve seen the production of this water dwindle over the past few decades, a change that is now impacting the North Atlantic. 🌊🧪❄️
