PhD defended! My thesis asks why, in 2025, we still explain housing crises, border regimes and climate breakdown through “overpopulation” – even when the evidence points to extraction, speculation and colonial histories instead.

You know what, no, it’s not ok to air-blow your nose as a cyclist on a busy commuter cycle lane. Second time in the last 3 weeks that the cyclist in front of me has emptied both his nostrils while cycling without checking how close the cyclists behind him are. 😫

Haha this is how you know Germany is still in the dark ages with tech...we have been going strong with handwritten and oral exams and they have nothing to do with AI.

Although the precariousness for non-profs is a major issue the the volume of teaching for profs is also really wild. 9 hours of teaching every week, every semester, which you cannot pass on to anyone else. Research time is about 10-20% if you are lucky (and have headspace left for anything). 🤯

Revealed: Leak casts doubt on COP30’s ‘informal list’ of fossil-fuel roadmap opponents - Carbon Brief Carbon Brief has obtained a leaked copy of the “informal list” of countries that were characterised as “blocking” the fossil-fuel roadmap’sat COP30.

Stellar reporting by @carbonbrief.org on what really happened with that 'roadmap' away from fossil fuels at COP30:

What a brilliant day - first a guest lecture in my @giubresearch.bsky.social BSc class on Key thinkers in development by @luisfernandez83.bsky.social on Biopolitics and Necropolitics - and then a visit by @harryquealy.bsky.social to our research group. Even a grey November day can be brightened.

Sierra Leone challenges COP30 push for private sector to fund adaptation Sierra Leone’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change Jiwoh Abdulai says that the private sector can’t meet adaptation needs.

Important: Do not count on the private sector to fund adaptation. They have no incentive to do it well and governments DO HAVE THE MONEY, they just need to stop doing other useless stuff like building weapons.

While COP30 winds down, I recorded episode 5 of the COPOut Podcast with the amazing @amywestervelt.bsky.social and @katharinehayhoe.com today. The whole episode airs on Monday, but here's a little preview of the amazing conversation:

INVITATIONS: There are also a few invitations. There are strong “requests” issued to COP presidencies. There are also “invitations” for countries to take action, such as the “call” to triple adaptation finance. Notably, “call” is the weakest verb that can be used.

COP30 TEXT ANALYSIS: One way to read dense COP text is to focus on the verbs. These are helpfully italicised – and for good reason.

MOSTLY INACTIVE: Carbon Brief analysis of the “global mutirão” text finds 69 inactive verbs, requiring no action, against 32 active verbs.
