This is likely to be the only footage I watch from the Winter Olympics and it’s perfect.

I do admire the Pantheon tradition in France. I don’t think it would work now in the UK but it’s a magnificent and very moving place. I shall go again next time I’m in Paris to see Bloch in his rightful place there.

This is rather special. Marc Bloch was a titan of modern historiography, and a big influence on me as a young history student. He was a brilliant French medievalist murdered by the Gestapo for both his Jewishness and his contribution to French resistance, but they couldn’t kill his work

Did Handel know when he had written something completely brilliant? Currently listening to Messiah but same goes (for me at least!) for Jephtha, Acis & Galatea, Dixit Dominus, Coronation Anthems, Keyboard Suites. Which is loads but nothing compared to the amount of v average stuff he knocked out…

I think he’s a fascinating character - and still no good biography that I know of! I have a rather nice print of him…
