Standards bodies can be good to undercut a dominant de facto standard, prevent the worst breaking changes when something is done and the leaders want to move on with conservative governance in place, etc.

No, clear spec and good impls > standard in general. There can be specific reasons to go to standards bodies — acrimonious governance being a common one.

The expressively of rust is lovely, but I still hit stupid fights with the borrow checker *just* enough times to pull me out of the core problem when I am coming to grips with problem/solution shape still.

The thing I miss while noodling/prototyping is a repl, to be honest. A set of tests I keep editing and treat like a well comes kinda close, but doesn’t actually get there.
