9th August 1942: Battle of Savo Island. In the early hours of the morning, a Japanese task force of seven cruisers and a destroyer under Vice Admiral Gunichi Mikawa entered the waters around Guadalcanal. Their intention was to destroy the Allied fleet landing troops on the island.
