"I have a plan": Comparing AI action plans in the EU, the UK and the U.S. Will economic competition overshadow AI safety?

The AI plans of the UK, the EU and the U.S. signal a shift in the AI debate. But who will get an edge in AI-induced growth and what does this mean for AI safety? danielflorian.substack.com/p/i-have-a-p...

One and a half hours of sparring with my new consultant ChatGPT on the potential delay of the entry into force of the EU AI Act. The question itself does not even matter that much but it's interesting to see the chatbot learning about politics with me. If they recall our conversation ....

Yes, European scale-ups need more money. But I doubt that an EU startup fund is going to do the trick. What would help is a harmonisation of EU financial markets and tapping into the savings of European citizens pro.politico.eu/news/199173

Quick question: Everybody seems to say that the OpenAI / Jony Ive collab is an attack to Apple. Why? Apple is not relevant in the AI space. Iโ€™d say itโ€™s an attack on Google who run both an OS and corresponding hardware and amazing software. Whatโ€™s your take?

We should really stop calling the EU a "colony" of US tech firms. Under the umbrella of colonialism, European powers have committed genocide and exploited whole continents and out of this historical responsibility, we should not self-victimize ourselves just because it "catchy". #POLITICOAITech

Is Friedrich Merz really the new strong man in Europe? The Conservatives won yesterday's election in Germany, but their leader Friedrich Merz still faces some challenges before he can enter the chancellory.

Merz averted disaster, but the knives are out Deep divisions among German conservatives could spell trouble for the new chancellor

Good piece by @constelz.bsky.social on the state of the Conservatives in Germany; but I'd argue there's three camps: the populist Conservatives (driven by AfD), the Merkel Conservatives (did really well in elections) and Merz's traditionalists (underperformed in elections): on.ft.com/452n6hv

Why AI's economic impact is still invisible โ€“ for now A look at history shows that new inventions need time to develop economic impact. And sometimes, we don't even recognise it fully.

@johnthornhill.bsky.social Do you think there is a case to be made that insurance increase might accelerate uptake of AI agents (think of Klarna, the Shopify memo) because agents donโ€˜t pay insurance? That would probably be unintended by the government but still a possible outcome?

I wanted to say: reservations against a blanket tech tax are compatible with targeted levies e. g. on digital advertising.

Arenโ€˜t these two different things? UvdL spoke about a levy on digital advertising which is sth. you can also hear from members of Germanyโ€˜s new coalition. That is compatible with a blanket tax on all digital services and would shield European tech firms from new taxes โ€ฆ

Merz's wing of the party (traditional Conservatives) performed below the national average in all states during the federal election.

Germanyโ€™s Merz is already in political trouble The incoming chancellor vowed to be a strong leader for Europe, but coalition talks may leave him focused on damage control at home.

This was predictable: If you look at the Conservative's election results state by state, it's clear that there will be pressure to lean towards the right from East German PMs and to the left from West German PMs where the party did better than national average: www.politico.eu/article/frie...
