I've found wifi service on amtrak depends on the train and the route. Eastcoast routes, especially if you're taking the acela, are usually ok. A backup plan is a good idea. Working on a laptop can be hard because the tracks are bumpy. Docs can close, cursors jump around. Not as easy as you'd think.
