On top of this, data centers destroy our planet and drive up our utility prices.
We need good schools, transit, housing, jobs, and food for our people.
At a time when Kansas Citians struggle to make ends meet, it is outrageous for PortKC to prioritize lining the pockets of billionaires.

This is straight out to the authoritarian playbook: silence dissent by making people scared to speak up.
The Democratic Party should be fighting like hell against these illegal actions by the Trump admin.

Joint Statement to Mayor Quinton Lucas and KCMO City Council: Reject KCATA Service Cuts and Fully Fund Our Transit
Whether we are Black, white, or Brown; East of Troost or West of Troost, North of the river or South of the river, we want our communities to be connected, inclusive and vibrant.
As organizations representing thousands of Kansas City residents, we write to express our deep concern about the city's current budget proposal for the Kansas City Area Transit Authority (KCATA). The current budget you are considering will cut 13 major bus routes and up to 175 good-paying union bus driver and maintenance jobs, as well as reducing frequency, operating hours and weekend service.
It will also suspend the IRIS microtransit program and eliminate the jobs of as many as 100 IRIS drivers. Workers, riders, and our environment cannot afford these cuts.
These cuts would create a transit crisis in our city at precisely the wrong moment. As we work to build a more equitable Kansas City and prepare for increased visibility during the 2026 World Cup, dismantling our public transportation infrastructure sends the wrong message about our priorities and values.
We urge you to keep our public transit system whole by fully funding KCATAβs budget in the upcoming fiscal year and rejecting any and all proposed service cuts for the transit agency as you finalize the City budget this month.
Our joint statement calling on Mayor Lucas and City Council to reject KCATA service cuts and fully fund our transit.

You can say routes will be saved but if the money isnβt there, the cuts will happen. If not the routes, it will be longer wait times.
Just b/c this wasnβt public until recently doesnβt mean city public works havnt been collaborating w/ kcata for months on plans to gut service

$6.8m is a start but not nearly enough to actually stop the service cuts and worker layoffs
We hope to see more movement on this before the budget is finalized

Kansas City will lose nearly half its bus routes under transit agency's drastic cost-cutting plan
According to documents obtained by KCUR, the agency plans to cut nearly half of its routes, drastically reduce weekend service and pare down its operating hours. It will also lay off about 171 workers...
βοΈNews broke today confirming that half of KCβs bus service will be cut and hundreds of workers laid off if City Council and the Mayor donβt act to fund buses.
The moment is here and itβs time to throw down before we no longer have a bus system to throw down for. π

What we need is permanent funding for buses across Jackson County. The good news is itβs not too late.
Jackson County legislature can put bus funding on the ballot in April before KC is forced to cut service. In order to do this though, the legislature must pass the ballot ordinance by 1/28

Jackson County Legislators refused to use federal COVID money to fill the gap in bus funding. This isnβt the outcome we wanted, but this makes the upcoming month even more important.
Using this federal money to fill the bus systemβs funding gap was always going to be a band aid solution.

Regional funding is critical to having a reliable transit system. We need people across Jackson County connected to jobs, healthcare, education and more community resources. Funding buses makes that a reality.
