I updated my goal recently to be 60 rejections in 2025 (down from 100). It was starting to feel more hopeless than motivating. But I'm at 42% of my yearly goal now! A little off-pace, but not hugely so.

And rejection 25 from Cosmic Background. 🌌

Rejections 21, 22, 23, and 24 from Strange Horizons (hooray for multiple poetry submissions at once!) Two of 'em came with encouraging comments. 🌃

I can't believe how long I went without Submission Grinder, thinking my lil spreadsheet would do the job. 🤦

Right? All the labor that goes into getting these stories out into the world can feel so lonely. I just figured, why not post about it? I get the rejections either way. Glad it is at least a little inspiring along with the sobering bits.

I see people saying stuff like "why criticize Substack but give other problematic platforms (like, say, YouTube) a pass?

Which is a fair point.

Thing is, YouTube is a quasi-monopoly for sharable video. Substack wants to have a newsletter monopoly but *isn't there yet*. And it should never happen.
