Re: the grant, it should go without saying that dark money is a clear and emphatic “no thank you.”

And, working under the hopefully reasonable assumption that evil money is the exception rather than the rule, I am genuinely so incredibly excited about this work.

If I’m leveraging factual information against information that is not factual, my approach is the more scientific.

And ethical. And honestly much easier than trying to shoehorn concepts into other concepts. I have a grant on this that’s basically writing itself.

It is good for science to progress.

Some people use the concept of aging to refer to socialization within the system.

I offer, as an alternative, actual factual information: you are literally an adult.

If you’re feeling disoriented and sickened by new information, you’re an adult feeling disoriented and sickened by new information.

None of this is specific to academia, of course. That’s just the field I know.

As we’ve now established, these issues transcend country, political affiliation, age, gender, and level of awareness and (coerced or voluntary) complicity.

Kind of a bummer that that’s the good news, but here we are.

It’s probably also worth noting that there are also men and non-binary survivors, at least within the #AcademicMeToo community.

Which makes sense, given that not every male professor is straight.

It’s probably difficult for male survivors in both similar and different ways.

But they count, too.

Meanwhile, I just keep doing my job and living my life. Amidst technologically-mediated death threats, rape threats, all kinds of unpleasant stuff.

I keep doing it because it’s either that or reinforce the terrorism and pawn the suffering off on other people.

I’ve got senior white male Clinical Science™️ up in arms over… wait for it… the legitimacy of a popular treatment for PTSD.

In case you’re interested to know how various sorts of grant dollars are being spent.

Add onto this the fact that some folks are thinking, “come on; everyone knows [thought vaccine / other euphemistic idea] is meant metaphorically”

and others, “what? of course [thought vaccine / other euphemistic idea] is the literal science”

…and we begin to see the shape and scope of the problem.

I’m seeing more and more folks start to believe that euphemism is a legitimate part of the scientific process.

I’ll cash in one of my ‘pedigree for days’ chips to state clearly: no, it isn’t.

Science requires you to name things accurately.

Subterfuge and Machiavellianism are just that.

And: please be aware that I do this with the benefit of years of experience, but/and often while undergoing rather severe digital terrorism.

I appreciate your willingness to work with me to resolve this really rather critical sociocultural situation.

This is a pivot for me, so this space is going to be somewhat chaotic for a while.

I have nothing left to prove and everything left to accomplish. I mostly write about academia, but it extends beyond.

Ex: If you’ve been using 🍉 in re: your experience, consider ‘gaslighting survivor’ instead.

It happens like this a lot. We have to blame someone, but pointing that blame at those actually responsible has been made utterly terrifying (see: tiktok receipts).

So we take our rage out on people we feel safe attacking.

And folks, there are a lot of looks right now, but that ain’t one of them.

I’m going to gently point out the cultural habit of focusing the blame on women.

I would like to encourage those folks to either shift their blaming back onto the men; to focus on praising women survivors; or to consider whether it’s worth sitting this one out.

Rankings don’t matter rankings don’t matter rankings don’t matter

and.

A certain university ~of despair~ that shall remain nameless just fell over a hundred places because all of their prestige came from their ability to get grants

Whereas universities with principles remained unscathed ✍️🤔

You can watch how the men around you respond to this, if you want to know which guys are trashing the world for everyone else because they can’t tolerate the idea of being accountable for themselves.

Okay, time to share the flip side of ‘just do better’

When men with money are pissed off at you, apparently they sometimes buy out most of a flight, and then you’re stuck in a tube in the sky with men doing and saying frightening things.

And now that’s public information, so at least there’s that.

I’m not looking to win a thumb war. I’m pointing out scientific approaches that fail to align with our stated values and the adverse consequences of relying on those tactics.

I would like us to stop throwing good resources after bad. We made a wrong turn. Second best time to turn around is now.

Okay fine yeah fair enough. It’s subtle; it’s nuanced; it’s mostly just about asserting epistemic dominance.

Any problem that can be solved with an UNO reverse card is worth seriously noticing as such.

(You know. In my opinion.)

What if every time you posted on social media, a bunch of guys who want you to shut up updated their own social media in response?

What if there were social pressures to overextend your science to account for it, because it’s been made next-to-impossible to just call it what it is?

What then?

Belief in conspiracy is belief that there are people willing to work together to get away with doing things that they aren’t supposed to be doing.

Successfully stigmatizing the idea of believing in conspiracies is probably actual conspiracists’ biggest win.

Friendly PSA: problem men on here don’t exist to me (at least, not until I’m in the mood to staple them to my wall and stick them with push pins).

You don’t need more information. You already know who they are and why I steer clear. What you need is a question that’s worth my time to answer.
