The Crumbling Foundations of American Strength
Knowledge is power—and the United States is losing it.
“If education and innovation are key to the United States’ ability to project power, then the country’s prospects are on shaky ground,” writes @amyzegart.bsky.social. “American K–12 education is in crisis.”

This is the model that has led the US to out-innovate the world. But it is eroding.

DeepSeek did not copy the playbook of US companies. It copied the playbook of US universities: 1. Asssemble the very best young talent. 2 Give them resources and freedom to do mad science.3 Focus on basic research— challenges with no immediate commercial application or profit.

I recognize there are tricky issues here to be worked through. But we are in a tech- ec-geopolitical competition and are playing with one big hand tied behind our back.

Working on analysis of national security implications of DeepSeek. One burning question: what if US intel agencies had warned tech leaders weeks or months beforehand? Would it have made a difference? If so, how? Would stock freakout have been tempered? Would we have alternative models already?

Re-upping my piece about how emerging tech is transforming power in 3 big ways: dynamics between countries; dynamics within US (private sector's unprecedented global natsec role); and sources of national power (rise of intangibles like knowledge, data). www.foreignaffairs.com/united-state...

The Trump admin is bringing disruption to US spy agencies. The question is what kind of disruption. Good disruption would revolutionize the use of open-source intel, AI tools, and outside expertise to track tech. Assessing where the US is ahead/behind China in key tech is critical.
