This is the model that has led the US to out-innovate the world. But it is eroding.

DeepSeek did not copy the playbook of US companies. It copied the playbook of US universities: 1. Asssemble the very best young talent. 2 Give them resources and freedom to do mad science.3 Focus on basic research— challenges with no immediate commercial application or profit.

I recognize there are tricky issues here to be worked through. But we are in a tech- ec-geopolitical competition and are playing with one big hand tied behind our back.
