It's still one of the more disturbing horror movies I've watched, very well done, but oooh boy, the dread is heavy!

Great first day at #CAMWS! We had a chance to check out a reception panel that was *chef's kiss*. Time to enjoy some amazing wine and Italian food at the nearby Napoli's. Come say hi!

I am very excited to be a part of this @antiquitymedia.bsky.social panel! It's the first time I'll be talking about popular reception in an academic setting instead of just on the @movieswedig.bsky.social podcast.

Who else will be attending #CAMWS2025 this year? #Academicsky #AncientBluesky

For anyone wondering, some possible dog names have survived from cuneiform sources.

On tiny dog figurines found buried under a palace in Nineveh, Iraq are inscriptions that seem to be names.

If thereโ€™s one thing Iโ€™ve learned since starting to talk #RealArchaeology online itโ€™s that conservatives often do not know what science grants are. It is not surprising to me that Trump is targeting them, they are a bogeyman in conspiracy communities. ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿบ

So @movieswedig.bsky.social completely summed up my problems with Gladiator II: 1, that the conclusion is a white hetero populist reclaiming kingship from queer and black usurpers through a speech of togetherness to an army, and 2, real Caracalla is fascinating and that's not him at all!!!

'Wolves of the Krypteia':
Lycanthropy and right-wing extremism in metal's reception of ancient Greece and Rome
ABSTRACT
Metal's pervasive (were)wolf motifs are key hermeneutics for the reception of classical antiquity by right-wing bands. Continuities of lupine themes and romantici-zation of Sparta and Rome exist between fascist Germany and Italy, contemporary far-right political and pagan organizations, and bands that combine these two subjects in a unique but consistent way. Also inspired by Nietzsche, Evola and social Darwinists, bands such as Der Stรผrmer, Kataxu and Spearhead trace their biological and spiritual ancestry to Sparta, emulating their lycanthropic militarism and racial terrorism. Bands such as Hesperia, Diocletian and Destrรถyer 666 utilize Roman wolf iconography to promote the destruction of civilization and return to 'natural' hierarchies. Like their fascist predecessors, these artists perpetuate patriarchal and racist distortions of both lupine behaviour and ancient Mediterranean civilizations. Such constructions nevertheless extend from the resonance of both wolves and classical antiquity with metal's common themes of transgression, hypermasculinity, elitism and nostalgia for premodernity.
