Someone once asked me why it took me 11 yrs of higher ed to earn a PhD in English when I could have been a neurosurgeon in roughly the same amount of time. The implication was: it shouldn’t take me that long to learn all those Shakespeare facts. He fundamentally didn’t get what studying lit *was*.

And this is why “historian” is usually at the top of those dumb lists of professions most vulnerable to AI. It’s because people don’t understand what historians, or the humanities more broadly, *do*! They think it’s just learning and regurgitating facts!
