Bourke’s train replacement boats were not unique; canoes maintained services when floods inundated New Zealand’s Manawatu" region in March 1880.80 Operations sometimes continued on flooded tracks. If the track is not undermined, steam engines can run through water as long as the water cannot extinguish the locomotive’s fire. They can, therefore, operate through much higher floodwaters than diesel and electric engines can handle. Colonial steam trains pushed through large floods – in one Tasmanian example from 1886, services continued across more than a kilometre of submerged track near Launceston.81 In one sense this demonstrates resilience, but it could also be foolhardy. A locomotive crew in New Zealand’s storm of 1879 narrowly escaped drowning when their train derailed on flooded tracks.82 Then, as now, the warning not to drive through floodwaters is sound advice."
