16.02.2026 16:37 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0as an aside, I think it’s kinda wild that people aren’t hammering on the console platform holders more in general, they’re getting increasingly terrible from a consumer perspective, they’re the biggest vertical integrators in the industry, and they absolutely don’t justify their 30% take anymore
15.02.2026 23:21 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0it’s purely hypothetical i guess but even in the best case scenario I don’t really see an outcome that isn’t 2-3 more really popular indie games making it a year, while the rest still rot on the vine
15.02.2026 23:07 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0right, but even if you look at the indie space, sheer release saturation and the immense popularity and influence of roguelikes in particular are making mindshare an uphill battle, and I’m not really sure CS2 gamblers are going to become rpgmaker enthusiasts if you blow up their casino
15.02.2026 23:01 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 3 📌 0I just don’t see how you effectively push enough mindshare away from things that are popular. Deadlock is a game with no monetization, marketing, or immediate access at present and it’s still making a substantial dent, how would you prevent a Deadlock? Short of completely dismantling Valve anyway
15.02.2026 22:37 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I see what you mean, multiple instances of targeted regulation as a death by a thousand cuts rather than broadly legislating industry safeguards
I think this would disrupt predatory monetization for sure (it already has in some countries that have done so), not sure about attention economy though
I can maybe understand “ban free to play” as like a blanket way to smother the root cause (even if I don’t think I could get behind that personally) but if it’s just a “you know it when you see it” situation that’s never going to be a thing you can reliably legislate
15.02.2026 21:47 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I guess I’m wondering what in particular that regulation would entail? The games you listed have little in common besides being free to play, and even their monetization tactics are pretty wildly different (battle passes vs a la carte skins cs gacha vs CS’ weird skin economy thing)
15.02.2026 21:39 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0I think we’re already sort of seeing the shift, ongoing economic realities are slowing the rate of change but the data is pretty clear that the audience for legacy games/franchises/subgenres age with them and the needle movers (lethal company, arc raiders etc) resonate more with younger people
15.02.2026 18:51 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I think you’d ultimately still have trouble prying people off of the heavily marketed AAA titles with or without predatory monetization models, many of the top 10 franchises now are the same ones that existed in 2009 - before mtx was really even a thing in most games
15.02.2026 18:03 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0the timeline on that would be psychotic if they ever wanted to like, actually produce and market another mainline game in the future so i’m assuming they aren’t gonna be super comprehensive remakes unless they’re building them directly on 2018/ragnarok’s engine
12.02.2026 23:17 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0it’s the entire trilogy so i’m assuming it’s gonna be Bluepoint “remakes” where it’s actually just a high production remaster built on the original games

12.02.2026 02:47 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0it’s easy to play Destiny with your friends in a way that no other multiplayer game really accomplished (you can drop in/out at any time in almost any content) and that’s done a lot of hidden legwork for retention imo
11.02.2026 23:43 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0i think if anything kneecaps Marathon longterm it’ll be that extraction shooters as a design framework don’t really support the super low friction drop in online features that helped keep halo and destiny on the charts for so long

09.02.2026 21:06 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 2 📌 0one of those was their physical card game Riftbound, which seems to be doing ok despite their previous (digital) card game dying on the vine, and another is their upcoming mmo.
They also had an entire second initiative for premium a la carte League spinoff games (Ruined King etc.) that failed.
anyway 2XKO took so long to come out that a bunch of other games ripping off Rising Thunder’s mechanics have already come and gone so it’s sad but not terribly surprising that they’re laying off like half the studio
