"Ben Green expects doom and his remote, self-sufficient farm is his refuge should society end as we know it. Cavanagh, though, sees something more like potential."

@mmcavanagh.bsky.social wrote an essay for @hazlitt.bsky.social about her week with a climate doomer.

In an abandoned military barracks in rural Germany, Ben Green is preparing for the end of the world. For @hazlitt.bsky.social, @mmcavanagh.bsky.social
spent a week with him to find out what exactly it looks like to try to escape climate collapse: hazlitt.net/longreads/hi...
"At the Collapse Lab, Ben gathered like-minded people who believed that climate collapse wasnโt just imminent, it was happening now.... I was curious. Collapse-curious, I joked to my friends..." The Hideaway by @mmcavanagh.bsky.social for @hazlitt.bsky.social.

a year later iโm still asking myself: how can we cope with uncertainty as we oscillate between doom and hope?
iโm grateful to have had the chance to work it out for hazlitt.bsky.social: hazlitt.net/longreads/hi...
(and to @ameliaschonbek.bsky.social for the clear-eyed and thoughtful edits!)
at the Collapse Laboratory, ben gathered like-minded people who believed that climate collapse wasnโt just imminent, it was happening now โ and that we needed to think deeply about how to show up for it. and i was curious.
04.12.2024 21:13 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0our host was a man named ben green (@thepirateben.bsky.social) in 2019, he bought the biggest, cheapest, most isolated piece of land he could find in germany and started what he calls โone manโs ten-year plan to build a post-climate catastrophe communityโ.
04.12.2024 21:13 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0last summer i spent a week living in an old army barracks-turned-eco-bunker, deep in the east german forest.
i was there for the Collapse Laboratory, a retreat that brought people together to think about how to prepare for the end of the world.
for the LA review of books i wrote about c pam zhangโs novel Land of Milk and Honey โ about pleasure, survival and catastrophe โ and the shrinking margin between dystopia and reality: lareviewofbooks.org/article/find...
28.01.2024 15:01 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0for @theatlantic.bsky.social i wrote about lytton, the canadian town still waiting to move home after it burned to the ground in 2021. what can it teach us about how to rebuild resiliently after a climate disaster?
