us.boell.org/en/cop30
One important piece of COP30: the climate finance roadmap started at COP29. Will governments agree to appropriate funding that matches the scale of the problem, or will they ignore their newfound legal obligations?
us.boell.org/en/2025/10/2...
Importantly, COP30 comes after the landmark ICJ decision that emission targets are no longer voluntary. States now have legally binding climate obligations to prevent climate harm. Climate obligations flow from general principles of international law.
us.boell.org/en/2025/08/0...
COP30 is taking place under pressure: from US withdrawal to demands for deep reforms to make the UNFCCC more just. But hopes are also high, as this COP should welcome more civil society participation and engagement - and Brazil has focused on implementation.
us.boell.org/en/2025/08/1...
#COP30 starts today in Belém, Brazil. There are many open questions: can countries deliver the ambitious financing necessary? What will a COP without the US look like? How will the ICJ's decision on government climate obligations impact the debate?
