Hey, I’m not saying it’s not confounding (honestly, I sometimes think the whole country is on some of these things). Tokushima was never so strict either. But I can remember doing that little dance at places like the Aeon Mall in Takamatsu because nobody was 100% certain about which side. πŸ˜‚

Yep. Tokushima was traditionally folded in as part of Kansai (and I believe Awaji as well). It may go back to the split that re-arranged Sankoku into Shikoku perhaps? That last part is mostly my own guesswork though.

FWIW, Shikoku follows Kansai, too. But Eastern Shikoku was traditionally included as part of Kansai anyway.

Everything you said sounds consistent though, with the possible exception of Kyushu. I’ve got a colleague who just moved back from Fukuoka, whom I might see tomorrow. If I do, I’ll ask. πŸ˜‰

Yeah, that’s why I said East vs. West. Although there are areas further out (far northeast like Aomori & Hokkaido; southwest like Kyushu) where I can’t confirm through personal experience. But everything I have been told also backs that up, FWIW.

Yeah, I lived in Kansai years ago, and now living in Kanto. Can confirm. In general, stand left/pass right in the East; stand right/pass left in the West.

If you think that’s strange, wait until you get a load of what they did with electric current here. πŸ˜‚

What’s more, many companies rely not on Patents for protection, but on Trade Secrets. Patents have better protection but expire, whereas Trade Secrets do not.

CCP does not recognize the concept of Trade Secrets. To them, anything that is not patented is basically Public Domain and theirs to take.

I used to advise to EU companies on OT Cyber. This is the sort of thing I would warn on if they operated factories in China. The CCP has rights to remotely access the networks of facilities within Mainland at anytime. If your factory has an open network pipeline directly back to your EU facilities…

It's hard to overstate how fully engaged Chicago and the surrounding suburbs are in this ICE madness. There are neighborhood watch alerts, spontaneous crowds gathering outside schools at pick up & drop off plus madly blowing whistles and honking car horns, this city is fighting back and hard.

It took me 3-4 rereads to get through the grammar here. But once I got the commas in their proper place, the message became even more frightening.

The fact congressional Democrats have not hired three dozen D&D rules lawyers with oppositional defiant disorder and turned them loose on parliamentary procedure with the goal of maximum obstruction is such a fucking missed opportunity

Klon letterboxd review of
So Wrong They're Right (1995) by Russ Forster

Before the internet crushed our spirit and warped us, hipsters used to collect bullshit like 8-track tapes just for the hell of it. There's a guy in this doc that had Metal Machine Music on 8-track. Can you imagine? He wasn't going to put it on eBay. He didn't snap a pic for Instagram, then leave it at the thrift store and listen to it on Spotify. No, he LISTENED to the goddamned thing. IN HIS CAR!

My brother had Marquee Moon on 8-track when I was a kid, and this is my new favorite letterboxd review

Waitasec, I’ve got a large collection of 8-tracks, because they blew them all out for, like, $0.99 per album when they discontinued the format…

And, yes, I actually do have a copy of Lou Reed’s β€œMetal Machine Music” on 8-track. And I have listened to it, more than once, IN MY CAR. 😈

The adrenaline ebbed, and the exultation of a moment years in the making passed. Wile E. Coyote looked down at the bloody, mangled corpse of the bird at his feet, and wondered - what now? He looked up, squinting in the desert sun, and saw a vulture circling in the cloudless sky.

"This isn't about China... This is about Americans"

People think they've broken free of the Matrix when they're just re-enacting 18th-century-grade Orientalism. Sorry but Voltaire and the Jesuits beat you to it.

This online moment is too dumb to deserve a name but if I had to: Digital Chinoiserie.

When I lived in the ME, I remember hearing the statistic that, as measured by income brought into the economy, the #1 employer for the entire Indian state of Kerala was Saudi Arabia.

Maybe a dumb question, but I wonder what actually would happen if a flood of US & expats just showed up on Xiaohongshu/Little Red Book/REDNote, and started sharing stories of the Hong Kong Protests, or the Uighur, or 6/4/89?

Would they let it slide for the newcomers, or would it prompt a crackdown?

Hard agree! I’m just sorry that its ratings were so low (thanks Acolyte) that I’m afraid it won’t qualify for a second season.

Well, considering that for many of us our parents were part of the Lost Generation (the generation between the Greatest Generation and the Boomers) which literally *never* gets acknowledged anywhere, I can’t say I’m surprised that we’ll all obviously disappear into the sands of time too. 🀨

Both!!!

I absolutely hate the phrase "rolled back". It makes it sound like they released a bad software patch. They aren't "rolling back protections and rights" they are TAKING AWAY protections and rights. Away from normal, not rolling back to normal. Stop saying it

You should; it’s excellent. The β€˜Candide’ comparison is a good one, but it was also released in the 70’s not long after popular media started noticing the writings of philosophers like McLuhan and academic critique of, errr, popular media. The self-referential analysis is also a nice element.

Similar circumstances for crossreference: Peter Sellers’ portrayal of the Chelsea Gardener character in, β€œBeing There”. Except Musk/Trump’s core personality note is malicious, rather than innocent.

A good visual reminder that there are non ethnic Chinese Hongkongers (and I don't "just" mean "white" people either).
