We tend to not feed the birds during the summer, but as we head into the colder months there are roving flocks of delinquent juvenile birds moving around looking for something to eat. So, I've just filled a couple of seed feeders. Within two minutes....
Doesn't take them long.
Just in from a lovely day out on the fells, guiding long-time client and friend Richard, with Nick and Julia up Gowbarrow.

Well, that's another very successful day and night on the hill. We have a brand new Mountain Leader in our midst! A massive Congratulations to Ed for pulling it all together on his ML reassessment. A brilliant result.

Hardly any breeze on the hill today, but the lovely aspen (Populus tremula - the 'tremulous poplar' or 'trembling poplar') just couldn't stop itself from having a little shimmy!
29.09.2025 17:27 β π 23 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Lovely colours on the hill this afternoon. Nice to see a few yellows still hanging on with the flowers - yellow saxifrage, ladies mantle and bog asphodel, but the pink of the roseroot leaves and the quaking shimmery-ness of the aspen stole the show!
29.09.2025 17:00 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A couple of places have become available on our Mountain Leader assessment courses this autumn. These courses were full, and it would be great to get them full again. Please let your ML trainee friends know.
Thanks.

Sadly, the βall bird speciesβ index, comprising the population trends of 130 species, has been in a slow continuous decline in the UK since the 1970s, down by 18% and by 4% in the last five years. π #Ornithology

Good to be back working on Great Gable yesterday, guiding Alan and Sean on a link up of classic scrambles. Threading the Needle, Sphinx Ridge and Pinnacle Ridge. A brilliant day of mountaineering.

Sadly, I've just deleted my 'beaver' post from France. I made a mistake in my enthusiasm. Turns out they were coypu. Sorry folks. But thanks to @ursus-spelaeus.bsky.social for correcting me.

Chalkhill Blue.

Wart-biter.
And another nice haul of Swiss flora and fauna today on Mont d'Or. Mountain Avens. False Medlar (aka Dwarf Whitebeam). Transalpine Burnet Moth on a Masterwort. Daphne berries.
