The true beneficiaries of strong discipline in schools are the quiet majority, i.e. the students who show up to learn, who dream of a classroom free from the outbursts of their disruptive peers, and who just want a chance to thrive in peace.

If Playbooks are like cookery books, they will have both ingredients (teaching techniques) & recipes (putting the techniques together to create something).

The WalkThru clusters (of sequenced techniques) are teachers' recipes, with a clear intention of what's being created.

Why does cognitive load theory wind some people up so much? The cognitive load theory conference offered no clue. It was full of grounded researchers, contesting experimental designs and aspects of the theory in the way we might expect. 1/9

For tasks requiring sustained attention, allowing workers to control when they take micro-breaks improves performance. Lots of qualifiers (e.g., simple tasks, need more research on metacognition) but aligns well w/self-regulation research.

I use the phrase β€œplay with the cards face-up.” Teach processes with clear examples. Then turn the cards over, but low-stakes to spot the errors. Build up fluency until there is independence.
