Although local authorities in several major cities are trying to turn the tide by investing in prestigious rail projects, including light rail and metro, urban public transport remains limited. Less flashy modes of transport, such as city buses and trolleybuses, are still being whittled away.

Ideally, public transport forms the backbone of intra-city mobility. A robust network of transit options contributes to reducing vehicle emissions and their negative impact on the environment and public health. Unfortunately, Central Asian governments have been slow to adapt to this reality.
