Well, that social media hiatus got out of hand. 😅

Took a few weeks off to recharge and focus on some creative projects, then got sick for two weeks, then sprained a rotator cuff!

Back now and will be resuming the Knights Errant AAR, with apologies to those who were following it!

Late to the party in saying this, but don't forget to keep "I'm sorry--let me rephrase that" handy. It's a lifesaver if you feel like you're starting to ramble or phone it in with an answer. In a flash, you go from unclear and meandering to poised and self-aware.

I try to avoid getting political on this account, but this post reminds me of something my dad said the other day.

My grandpa (dad's dad) was a decorated flight engineer in the Army Air Corps in WWII.

The game ended up clocking in at around seven hours 😅, although that included about 20 minutes of setup and a few minutes of note-taking at the end of every turn.

It didn't "feel" long, but it's definitely too long without some kind of campaign or "save" mechanism, imo.

Also, because I'm an insufferable pedant and decided to type this on my phone...

I feel like I have a lot of notes and direction for how to fine-tune the game, with some future playtests hopefully confirming these thoughts.

For one, it may end up becoming a campaign game...

For anyone designing a board game, I highly recommend a solo playtest. It's an illuminating experience!

5. The quests and items felt relatively balanced.

6. Many plot twist cards got recycled without being used, but some were invaluable. Some may need to be replaced.

7. The storytelling aspect was fun but may need some more work to feel fully fleshed out.

3. Kingmaking is a non-concern. Even the chevalier who got absolutely ganged up on at one point came roaring back and could've one of they'd been less risky.

4. The game takes much longer than expected to play. (At six players and 25 turns, I don't know why I expected it'd come in under 5 hours...)

Lessons learned from the solo playtest of Knights Errant:

1. The scoring system worked well. All but one chevalier (keep up with the AAR to find out who!) scored in a tight cluster.

2. Comebacks are possible. Those who seemed guaranteed to lose ended up doing great!

In that case, I like the suggestion from @elfherself.bsky.social. With that, you could hit two birds with one stone.

Also, do you have art or text on your back covers, or are they blank? If not, you could put the explanation there, along with a blurb about your company and a QR code to the section on your site--kinda like a summary or "critics' praise" section on the back of a novel.

Fair! I can see how this would make it tricky.

For Atomic Family, I question whether you even need that section. The second paragraph on p.1 already tells the players what to expect. Maybe with some edits, it'd be possible to add a sentence: "A TTRPG is an interactive storytelling game."

Out of curiosity, how big are your zines, and how much (or little) space do you conceivably have to work with for a section like that?

For me, it was the "D & DD" episode of *Dexter's Laboratory* and the "Arrgh!" episode of *SpongeBob SquarePants*.

I was a little kid, and those game episodes got my imagination going. My dad then told me about D&D and his old group.

I spent hours making games as a kid--and haven't stopped since!
