a creepy shadow shape of a girl sits above a doorway that a girl about the same age with brown wavy hair stands in. Wallpaper of vines and flowers in sickly browns, pinks and yellows covers the wall.
Sixth-grader Violet deals with a move to a new house, middle school & shifting friends when she's flattened by a virus (not covid)...and there is something evil in her attic room. #NotQuiteAGhost by Anne Ursu is a page turner that hooked the 11-yr old reader in me. #MGlit #kidlit ๐๐๐ป

This book was definitely a GREAT READ! It introduces a lot of Gullah Geechee folklore and spiritual elements. Highly recommended.
"Root Magic" by Eden Royce is a captivating historical fiction novel that delves into the world of Gullah magic and culture in 1960s South Carolina. The story follows 11-year-old Jezebel "Jez" Turner, who, after her grandmother's passing, begins to learn the secrets of root magic from her uncle.
As Jez navigates her newfound powers, she must also contend with the harsh realities of racism and prejudice in her small community. With the help of her twin brother, Jay, and her uncle, Jez learns to harness her magic to protect herself and her loved ones from those who seek to harm them.
Throughout the book, Royce weaves together elements of African American folklore, history, and culture, creating a rich and immersive narrative that's both informative and entertaining. "Root Magic" is a powerful and moving tale of self-discovery, family, and the enduring power of tradition and culture.
I'm a huge fan of Eden Royce, a talented Gullah Geechee author! I had the privilege of speaking with her previously and although we couldn't meet in person due to her residing abroad, our conversation was a wonderful opportunity to share my appreciation for her writing. Check the ALT: "Root Magic".
