Like learning a new language, learning how to collaborate in a self-managing team requires us to be a beginner. Many times we might want to revert back to our native language of hierarchy, where we feel capable and confident. Becoming fluent in new ways of working takes commitment and practice.

A great example: the wildly successful Morning Star that has always operated on two principles:
1) individuals should not exercise the use of force against other people (or the property of other people)
2) individuals should honour their commitments to others.

Someone told me recently they regularly refer back to this article I wrote last year in work meetings.
But where it had the most impact was actually in coaching their 18 y/o son's football team.
To get to high performance, we have to go THROUGH conflicts.

โWe are projects of collective self-creation. What if we approached human history that way? What if we treat people, from the beginning, as imaginative, intelligent, playful creatures who deserve to be understood as such? What if, instead of telling a story about how our species fell from some idyllic state of equality, we ask how we came to be trapped in such tight conceptual shackles that we can no longer even imagine the possibility of reinventing ourselves?โ โ David Graeber, The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity
I know I'm late to the party but I'm really enjoying reading 'The Dawn of Everything'...
07.12.2024 11:16 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Whenever she's told me about it, it sounds really cool and definitely in line with recruiting 'architect' types.
Found this video where she talks a bit about what they did in Wellbeing Teams re: recruitment e.g. One Page Profiles, inviting people to a day's workshop etc: youtu.be/jwKlxi-p3rY
Finally read this. Great stuff! That school study is quite mind blowing & thinking of the potential if we had more 'architect' leaders in the NHS... wow.
In terms of recruiting them, Helen Sanderson has an amazing recruitment process for that they used in Wellbeing Teams. (Award-winning, in fact!)
Love this.
Also reminds me of another good quote I learned from a Swede:
โPower is like fertiliser โ in concentrated form itโs suffocating,
but when distributed it contributes to growth.โ

Sorry, I'm a Bsky newbie - I realise what you mean by 'starterpack' now. @matthewmezey.bsky.social also asked if I would make one :)
I need a bit more time to find everyone, I think!
Oh yay! How fun. Good question. Where do YOU think would be a good place/forum for conversation about episodes? There are comments options on the podcast site etc. but that tends not to be a dialogue, I guess.
Re: starter pack, I've been working on this for a while bossless.info - launching soon ๐ค
A preview of the blog "Hazards on the path to organisational self-management: pitfalls to watch out for when exploring new ways of working" by Lisa Gill. The image is a deck of tarot cards with names like 'Canyon of Consensus', 'Whirlpool of dynamics', and 'Green trap'.
My latest blog about patterns I've noticed over the last eight years of organisations exploring self-managing teams.

Let's see what's on offer here!
I'll be posting about new ways of working, self-managing organisations, and other nerdy/fun stuff.
