We had a similar catch-22 when we lived in Japan for a year on student exchange. The received wisdom from students who'd studied in previous years was 'go to this one specific phone shop behind the railway station' ... it worked. I suggest combing expat forums for a similar tip

I guess UK politicians aren't conscious of the visceral anger ideas like that cause in their 'former colonies'. And I guess they never think demographics have changed after 50 years of encouraging non-UK immigration. And that over 100 years of watching UK from afar means any respect & trust is gone

I can't prove it, but I write every day for work: Microsoft's spell checker and grammar checker have got significantly worse in the last 6-12 months. I think it's switched to something AI-based whereas the pervious non-AI one actually worked most of the time

And this is why using AI to learn any language, let alone languages that are not English. never made sense to me.
Because even if a language is represented, the vast majority of training data is English.

Conservatives the world over think they're the natural governing party of their country. It's part of their schtick. Labour/leftists parties see themselves as being immeshed in a struggle/fight for power, conservatives see themselves as the natural/normalised/inevitable rulers

This is going to overlap in a very problematic way with a lot of evangelical literature about submission to God's will and also with the strong growth in trad wife ideas-also about submission. Not needing to think for your self, not taking responsibility for your actions is very attractive to people

I otherwise very much dislike that Australian government & generally agree ACAB, but it's the right response. Terrorists should be tried in the courts, rather than bombing countries or territories, killing 10s of thousands of civilians...
Yes, the US reaction to 9/11 was abysmal also, in my opinion

Netanyahu went on to claim Israel was “actually applying force judiciously, and they know it”.
“They know what they would do if right next to Melbourne or right next to Sydney you had this horrific attacks. I think you would do it, at least what we’re doing, probably maybe not as efficiently and as precisely as we’re doing it.”
I know what the Australian government *did* when 88 Australians were killed in a terrorist attack in Bali. The Australian government/police worked with the Indonesian government/police to arrest & try the terrorist leaders. I'm proud: that's the right response to terrorism & what I wish Israel did

So, it *could* be my end, but I am having a lot more trouble getting card images in my personal decklists to load. I *think* I'm doing pretty much the same things as last week, when it worked totally fine

I remember these lists from the previous iteration - jobs most likely to be lost to computerisation. Looked up a few jobs I know: lawyer; sewing machine operator. Both wrong in opposite ways. I did some research - lists were compiled by interviewing small numbers of academics/uni students. Hmm.

I rarely went to court. But in 1999, the partners/owners emailed the whole law firm to say that after a long debate, they would allow women to wear suits with trousers. But if a client objected: we must change back to a skirt. So each day, I thought about my scheduled meetings & who might complain

This is key techbro/90s nerd/incel mythology. There *have always been* women interested in this stuff, alongside men. But those women were vigorously pushed out: either because they got tired of being nerd-knoweldge checked; because the IT industry is ultra misogynistic or they just don't count...

I don’t do doomerism. Cause I know too many wonderful people who grew up in fascism, war, poverty, or all of the above. And everything that is good in my life is good because people like them fought for better. In 50 years, I hope people remember that we did the same. And that hope costs me nothing.

Favourite classes get a spot in 1 or 2 Gamegenic boxes. Or else they're in an Ashes:Phoenixborn box (those are nice, solid boxes). Generics are in the Round The Table box... starting to overflow. Classes I'm not playing are in various Team Covernant mailing boxes, lined with acid-free #fabcw #fabtcg

this is an all hands on deck situation. the enemy got results with 1000 phone calls.
we can beat them

For example, if you search for 'cheeto' (that spelling) on BlueSky, some of the top/latest hits are food, but a lot of the posts are referring to Trump

When people say 'Cheeto', don't they usually mean Donald Trump? I know you're spelling it differently, but it sounds the same. Are the LSS devs really sure they want to popularise Cheeto as the name for this FaB character, right at this moment in world politics?

I appreciate how stressful this is. The Tony Abbott years were my taste of wild, bullshit ideas, daily. Morrison was less bad because at least I had some hope the states would call out his worst ideas. I hope you find ways of compartmentalising/ignoring this shit, that work for you

I like Codenames a lot, but I'm disappointed you chose to work with JKR & the Harry Potter IP. We all know the damage she's doing with her royalties, trying to get laws changed in ways that harm people. Unfortunately, I won't be buying any additional Codenames/CGE products now

3. Bloomberg *could* have stuffed up its reporting in some way? It's unlikely, but not completely impossible. Perhaps they reported some conditional or subjunctive sentences as though they were definitely true?

I also can't discount that it may have been a local Sydney and/or Australian phenomenon (why?), because in the 90s we were disconnected from overseas TTRPG culture. We called LARPS "freeforms" for example. The internet existed in this time, but it was a much smaller cultural influence than today

I re-entered similar scenes from 2020 (TCGS/CCGS/extensible card games) and was shocked at how few women even progressive-feeling card games have. I strongly believe women's representation in these types of scenes has gone backwards, but can't find any source material to prove it.
