We had a similar catch-22 when we lived in Japan for a year on student exchange. The received wisdom from students who'd studied in previous years was 'go to this one specific phone shop behind the railway station' ... it worked. I suggest combing expat forums for a similar tip

I guess UK politicians aren't conscious of the visceral anger ideas like that cause in their 'former colonies'. And I guess they never think demographics have changed after 50 years of encouraging non-UK immigration. And that over 100 years of watching UK from afar means any respect & trust is gone

I can't prove it, but I write every day for work: Microsoft's spell checker and grammar checker have got significantly worse in the last 6-12 months. I think it's switched to something AI-based whereas the pervious non-AI one actually worked most of the time

And this is why using AI to learn any language, let alone languages that are not English. never made sense to me.

Because even if a language is represented, the vast majority of training data is English.

Not needing to think for your self, not taking responsibility for your actions is very attractive to people

I also can't discount that it may have been a local Sydney and/or Australian phenomenon (why?), because in the 90s we were disconnected from overseas TTRPG culture. We called LARPS "freeforms" for example. The internet existed in this time, but it was a much smaller cultural influence than today

I re-entered similar scenes from 2020 (TCGS/CCGS/extensible card games) and was shocked at how few women even progressive-feeling card games have. I strongly believe women's representation in these types of scenes has gone backwards, but can't find any source material to prove it.
