It's a very comprehensive report that goes a long way to addressing limitations of previous reporting.
Many entities based policies on the assumption that Bitcoin was "mostly powered by fossil fuel", I hope those entities will revise their policies in light of this new data
The report comments more broadly on Bitcoin, for example showing evidence that the amount of Bitcoin used for elicit purposes peaked in Percentage terms in 2019, and absolute volume terms in 2022 and is now trending downwards across both metrics
28.04.2025 17:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The report showed a trend towards greater machine efficiency, a factor which some commentators in the past have not factored in (Similar to the early Internet commentators who didn't factor in Moore's Law when speculating on Internet energy use)
28.04.2025 17:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Finding: eWaste
Cambridge found that Bitcoin mining companies compare favorably to other industries when it comes to eWaste, with a very high 86.9% of equipment being repurposed, recycled or sold.
Methane mitigation:
However, when the impact of mining using carbon reducing sources (such as flare gas power) are factored in, net emissions drop to 37.6 MT CO2e.
Meaning, methane mitigation is currently offsetting 5.5% of total network emissions (close to my estimate of 7%)
Finding: Overall emissions are significantly lower than previous estimates (and have not increased notably in the last four years due to improved machine efficiency and migration to more zero emission power sources) - 39.8 MT CO2 (slightly less than my own estimate of 42 MT CO2).
28.04.2025 17:29 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Findings: Emission intensity
Emission intensity has dropped substantially. Their estimates put it at 288.2 g CO2e/kWh (very close to my own estimate of 266 g). This puts it at less emission intensive than other major industries
Their report found that 26% of all mining happens offgrid (previous reports did not factor this community of miners in).
Most offgrid miners do so to access cheaper power, which tends disproportionately to be sustainably sourced
Firstly, this report improves on previous reports by including detailed surveys of 49 Bitcoin mining companies.
Previous reports assumed that Bitcoin mining happened ongrid, and was also based on a time when a lot of (fossil fuel based) mining happend in China or Kazakhstan
Cambridge has just released their updated report on Bitcoin mining
For the first time, their report shows that most (52.4%) of the Bitcoin network is now powered by zero emission energy sources (up from 37% in their last report)
Here's a summary of their findingsπ

Son: Are we better off now?
Dad: Well son, mom & dad have both lost their jobs. Our savings are gone, gas & grocery prices are up. We did, however, save you from drag queen story time.
Son: What's that?
Dad: A mythical thing they said was happening in your school, which we can't afford anymore.
