Of course, Peter. My dream while in med school was to quit medicine at some point and devote myself full time to writing. I did quit medicine but lol & lmao I wish writing could sustain me financially.

2 of my 3 books have earned out their advances. In a good year I’ll make about $100 - 200 CAD total in royalties. Not counting the year in which I won 2 major prizes. Sales were quite good in that year although I forget how much I made on top of the $400 CAD advance.

My main income is the salary I earn as a manager in a provincial health authority. I get infrequent royalties for my books (minus ~$200 CAD total on my last statements, meaning I’ll need to pay back from future sales). Advances tend to be about $1k CAD with my current publisher, paid in 2 chunks.

I thought I was good with ROYGBIV! I have been shamed because apparently I don’t even know that one. Toh.

Lighting is certainly a factor. It would not explain it all in my case. Whenever I’m confusing a colour it’s usually in company, and they’re seeing a different colour than I.

And that, kids, is how I discovered I have some form of anomalous trichromacy (likely some species of tritanopia).

There have been many lively arguments in which I boldly misidentified a colour that the majority believed to be different. I now accept that I cannot tell the difference between some pinks and purples, and most colours on the blue-green spectrum. It has been quite humbling.

The kids confidently (and correctly) use like words cyan, magenta, teal, and aqua. I’m just glad they didn’t need to learn them from me. I can barely tell hues apart.

We’re about a year out from the publication of Best Canadian Poetry 2027. The team at Biblioasis has been reading diligently for most of the year, but requests your help with finding even more Canadian writing published in 2025. Details in the image and QP.

People always ask me, “how do I know my manuscript is done?”

There’s only one way, my friends.

If your file name looks something like this:

Manuscript - Final Draft 3.7 FINAL FINAL - FINAL (5).docx

Then, and only then, is it time.

That’s an intriguing concept. Could you share a bit more about films with light as the main character?

What do you mean by “we have a few more months of this darkness”?

I realized (belatedly) that the season has been disordering my affect.

I’m usually depressed year-round but this? This is special.
