Two adjacent dippers produce circular wavefronts that produce an interferance pattern showing regions of constructive and destructive interference.

We have a lovely class set of little ripple tanks that allow them to play around and observe wave behaviour

Even though they say 'I don't need to use that' when I introduce 'squashy cos', by the end of the year they all use squashy cos to find components.

Large Pendulum Wave - Glow Eindhoven 2013
YouTube video by Kermiscity Large Pendulum Wave - Glow Eindhoven 2013

Day 23 - As I sit untangling my daughters Newton's cradle (!!!!) I need something relaxing and mindless to accompany the infuriating task. Luckily I have this video of a giant pendulum wave with notes for each swing.

I like this one as a predict, observe and explain exercise to hammer home force on a current in a magnetic field and Fleming’s Left Hand Rule.

But audio cassettes are back on sale now so I’m not sure this will be any time soon.

But isn’t the speed of light invariant πŸ˜‰ Also there are materials with a higher refractive index.

I’ve turned up some real gems from @helenrey.bsky.social’s spreadsheets. A really great resource when first planning or refining your teaching of a topic.

How do you service your VdG? New belt? Is there more to it? Ours aren’t working that well. The belt speed seems quite variable even with new belts. Might we need to replace motors or brushes?

Wow, a lot of hard work has obviously gone into this and it features so many great ideas explained really well with links and videos. If you want new ideas for teaching magnetism from KS3-5 this has plenty.

How do you define ethnically British and what would you like to be done to make it ethnically British again?

Depends a lot on the framing and impact.
There's a lot to be said for lay noticing/questioning (I saw this... what's the thinking?)
One of the problems with lesson observation is that we have entangled observing and evaluating, and then put a lot of weight on those evaluations.

21.11.2024 20:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I like this a lot. Non judgemental observations are really useful feedback. Direct suggestions probably require someone with significant domain knowledge to be useful and instructive.

21.11.2024 20:58 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Here’s another hypothetical. You are a tailor with training and experience of measuring people and carefully stitching together fitted clothes. If someone who hadn’t ever sewn anything came and made suggestions of how to do your job better how would you value their feedback?

21.11.2024 20:33 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Rejecting advice and feedback out of hand is not great, but questioning feedback because the provider doesn’t have sufficient understanding and insight to give useful feedback seems very sensible to me.

21.11.2024 20:19 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I’d listen to their feedback and potentially respond to it but on the whole I suspect I’d be fairly sceptical.
