Yup, and that would have been an opportunity ten years ago for Elizabeth Warren to say, "I believed a myth I was told. I was wrong, and here's why that myth is harmful," and educate the public.

Instead, she doubled down and perpetuated that mythology, and now here we are.

Anyway, to state the facts clearly for the record: Elizabeth Warren is probably not Native American, a DNA test cannot prove you are Native for the same reason a DNA test cannot prove you have a US passport, and pretending otherwise is literally settler-colonial propaganda rooted in genocide.

But of course, most people don't understand the mythology of white Native "ancestry" - due in part to Elizabeth Warren specifically! - so it's easy for the post to run with a catchy headline that conflates the two and draws a false equivalence.

In reality, the two cases could hardly be more different. Zohran Mamdani gave a truthful answer to a question that was badly worded and broken by design. Elizabeth Warren spread white settler-colonial mythology and then defended it with more racist mythology.

The NY Post headline is in bad faith as usual, but If I were Zohran Mamdani, I might have waited a couple more weeks before hitting the campaign trail with a woman who famously not only lied about her race on an application, but then defended her lie by spreading racist and genocidal propaganda.

So if the right wing does succeed in overturning US v. Windsor, they may be surprised by how many wealthy and powerful gays who never bothered to stand up for (eg) trans kids' human rights are suddenly activated and extremely motivated to get the GOP out of office to restore their property rights.

Like many landmark cases, this was also "chosen" in some degree - ie, advocates and legal orgs choose which cases to pursue because they know what will be more likely to succeed in our legal system (which generally cares more about property rights for wealthy whites than civil rights)

It's no coincidence that the case that established marriage equality - US v. Windsor - was about a white woman who sued over the way her inheritance was being taxed (because her marriage to another woman wasn't federally recognized).
