"I am so heartbroken for you and for your family," NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, her voice cracking a bit, tells Officer Islam's wife.

Adams offers special thanks to "the men and women of SRG," the NYPD's Strategic Response Group, which responded to Monday's shooting.

Mamdani confirmed yesterday he would as mayor disband the SRG, citing its members' alleged abuse of power in responding to protests.

Speaking at NYPD Officer Didarul Islam's funeral, Mayor Adams starts off by thanking elected officials in the room, mentioning, for instance, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. He doesn't mention Zohran Mamdani.

"I apologize if I'm missing any name of any other elected," he says.

While Zohran Mamdani and Eric Adams have both met with NYPD officer Didarul Islam's family since Monday's mass shooting, Andrew Cuomo hadn't yet spoken to the relatives as of Wednesday afternoon, he acknowledged in an interview.

Mamdani confirms he will attend Officer Islam's funeral tomorrow. He says Islam's brother-in-law invited him.

Mamdani doesn't say explicitly that he regrets some of his anti-police tweets from 2020 but calls them "clearly out of the step with the vision" he has presented in his mayoral campaign.

Speaking of Cuomo & others criticizing his previous anti-police stance, Mamdani says it "is beyond me that politicians are looking to use these days to score such cynical political points on the very day that I held the father of officer Islam in my arms...as I felt him sobbing."

Mamdani also says he shares Gov. Hochul's call for a nationwide ban on assault weapons.

"As mayor, I will lead calls to make sure that we pass the legislation necessary beyond New York," he says.

Mamdani says he won't call the shooter by name and focuses his remarks on the victims.

Describing his meeting with Officer Islam's family this morning, he says they are "heartbroken in a way that words cannot fully describe."

Etienne also pleaded for new gun control legislation "to make sure we have a secure city, a secure state and a secure country."

Next is Shamsul Haque, co-founder of the NYPD's Bangladeshi American Police Association, who thanks Mamdani for meeting with Officer Islam's family.

Smith Etienne, the brother of Aland Etienne, the security guard killed by the Park Ave. shooter, is appearing with Zohran Mamdani and 32 BJ head Manny Pastreich to honor the victims.

He says his brother was an aspiring filmmaker and adds: "New York City has lost a hero."

"[The SRG's] budget has increased from $13 million to $133 million since 2015, with no public oversight. Their members have higher misconduct complaints than the NYPD as a whole, and several SRG officers were involved in the 2018 killing of Black New Yorker Saheed Vassell."

Zohran Mamdani returned to NYC early this a.m. & got through customs at JFK without issue, per a rep.

He plans to hold a presser this p.m. to address the Park Ave. shooting. He's expected to be joined by the founder of the NYPD's Bangladeshi American Police Association.

Adams didn't criticize Mamdani by name in the TV hit, but did say public safety proposals he has floated "really can harm law enforcement." Just yesterday, Adams called it "despicable" that Cuomo opted to "inject politics" by criticizing Mamdani in the wake of Monday's shooting.

"That is extremely dangerous," Mayor Adams says on CNBC of Zohran Mamdani's vow to disband the NYPD's SRG.

He says the unit deals with "extremely dangerous" situations like Monday's Midtown shooting. He doesn't mention it has been criticized for excessive force during protests.
