3/4 The cover image shows this process of wave-like expansion in action, with colours representing the age of the network edges. Brighter colours are younger. Print cover credit: Corentin Bisot. Special thanks to www.spun.earth and @tobykiers.bsky.social π

Using a bespoke robot to track growing fungal networks, the paper reports that fungi build networks as self-regulating traveling waves www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-08614-x

This weekβs @nature.com cover is a multi-sensory spectacular, complete with the fascinating, almost wet sound of fungal networks spreading, recorded by artist @cosmosheldrake.bsky.social in an Araucaria forest on the side of a volcano Chile.
05.03.2025 18:47 β π 34 π 6 π¬ 4 π 14/4 We added a second colour, but the bluish hue is not random π¨ It's the false color often given to Bennu in similar images, thus continuing a useful visual language for communication. Special thanks to Tim McCoy/Smithsonian Institution, and Sara Russell/NHM London for pointing out the blue π
30.01.2025 16:57 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 03/4 The use of a single colour with grayscale is powerful, and if not for the special needs of a cover - like legible logos and text, and the ability to stand out in a variety of digital and physical spaces - we may have stopped there.

2/4 False colour is not always appropriate, but I'd argue a cover is an exception, as it often communicates the point more immediately to a wider audience. We asked the authors to consider it and they agreed, with excellent work by Heather Roper at Univ of Arizona who added purple to the salts.

1/4 The case for false color. This weekβs @nature.com cover shows exciting results from the asteroid Bennu, as seen in these pointy purple sodium salts! www.nature.com/articles/s41... Why did we use false colour? π§ͺπ¨

Thanks to artist Marcin Ambrozik for perfecting it on this week's cover, to go with this paper on fossilized poo and vomit www.nature.com/articles/s41...
