I hate admitting it but yes to me it is very fun and I might even spend a whole weekend doing it which is very sad. It would be more meaningful if I could say "yeah, I'm a developer" but I'm not- I'm just a nerdy enthusiast.

And I have to mention that I use AI to determine which ones to use since AI can understand what op codes or whatever the file uses. So if something uses a bunch of loops then AI will say "well use this." But if it's heavy math stuff then it's going to give me a different answer.

I just learned that Ubuntu used -O3 and learn that in many cases it didn't speed things up at all and quite the opposite. So I do a combination of-O2 with two or three of the -O3 options. So I get the performance without the binary bulk but these also depend on what operations the file uses.

I probably have to mention, or should have mentioned in my original post, that building these applications for performances probably more educational value than anything. I could swear my games are running smoother though but it could be my imagination too. I'm really bad at actually benchmarking it

Oh interesting. I can show you my build command but it has LTO. I don't do the deep performance tuning where you run it and it records the performance and then later optimizes it. What is that like a two pass thing then you compile it again I don't know.

But right now I'm very happy with just compiling the very key components like Mesa and everything that makes Mesa fast under the hood. It's kind of a nice balance because other system files I don't really think need to be so fine-tuned but I agree with you.

I did compile Firefox also and steam proton but photon uses a container and within that container is a really old tool chain. I asked the developers if there was a newer container somewhere and he kind of barked at me saying it would make everything incompatible. Well okay. That's how it goes

Yes, and that's the obvious choice but years ago I tried to install it and it crashed during the install process. After I kind of reviewed some of the libraries and they were a little outdated as well as the tool chain but this may have all changed since then.

I lived there when Orban won. They have 7-8 parties, of which 3 or 4 are blatantly xenophobic and racist. I think all were antisemitic. Hungary has, and probably always be, on the wrong side of history.
